Coming off Propanalol

Morning

I’ve been on propanalol for about 7 weeks now (40mg 3 times a day to start now just once a day) for a high heart rate and palpitations due to a thyroid problem. It’s resolving this week and I think as things settle my heart rate is going back to normal so the propanalol is taking it too low now.

Not seeing endocrinologist for a couple of weeks and I don’t know if I’ll be able to see GP anytime soon so wondered if propanalol needs to be tapered down or if I can just stop taking it as long as I feel ok and heart rate stays ok??

I’ve just started it for migraines. Box of mine says all over do not stop taking except on medical advice. I’m not a GP or any type of medical practitioner but sounds like you may have to taper or titrate down.

You just just stop propranolol. You have to taper off it.

Thanks both. I’ve taken half a tablet instead, last few days my heart rate was in the 40s and made me feel really woozy so hopefully this will be fine!

DominoRules how did you get on with coming off propranolol? I tapered off it and have a fast heart rate and killer anxiety!

DominoRules · 25/03/2026 20:48

@WoundedWidower I was fine, tapered down over a couple of weeks and no issues since. My high heart rate was caused by a thyroid issue though so once that was sorted out my heart rate went back to normal anyway.
Poor you with anxiety, can you get advice from GP?

@DominoRules The GP was very dismissive and says it's just the anxiety that I had before, but this is 1000x worse than I've ever had it. I guess I'll just have to wait it out and hope it settles down. Glad you didn't feel bad coming off.
