AIBU refusing to go for smear

ok not as daft as it seems, honestly it isn't

about 3 years ago I had a bad smear and had a loop diathermy to remove it under GA - 6 months later had private smear and all clear

1 year later had NHS smear and all clear, recalled for 6 months

6 months later had NHS smear and all clear, recalled for 6 months

6 months later had NHS smear and all clear, recalled for 6 months (are you seeing a pattern yet?) - asked doctor and she said oh that's odd

6 months later had NHS smear and all clear, told nurse she said that's odd and recalled for 6 months

due in March - haven't been yet - had reminder letter from hospital - can't get appointment before period this month - can't be bothered again (and it hurts because supposedly has twisted)

am thinking I should just put myself on year recalls and go in September tbh

After 4 all-clears YANBU, but I would definitely go every year.

JRocks · 20/05/2008 09:32

Does seem a bit odd - I thought procedure was annual smears if you had been given all clear?

RubySlippers · 20/05/2008 09:33

so you have had 4 smears in 3 years and all are clear?

if so, then i would go in Sept

yuo have just reminded me that i need to book mine as i haven't had one for 3 years

Raffaella · 20/05/2008 09:34

Think you should go tbh. My sister had a similar procedure and she had to have 6 monthly check ups for 5 years.

It's such a quick procedure now (had mine the other day and was amazed how quick it was). Nurse said it was because they now use disposable speculums/scrapers whatever the word is.

HereComeTheGirls · 20/05/2008 09:36

I would go, I don't think they recall you every 6 months just for fun ..if you didn't need it then they would discharge you/ask you to come back every year IMHO

ZoeC · 20/05/2008 09:36

I had loop diathermy and have been going annually for nearly 10 years now. 6 months seems a bit much, but I think locally they keep you going annually for 10 years. Hoping my time is nearly up tbh!

WigWamBam · 20/05/2008 09:46

I think you should go, Twig. They do six-monthly recalls for a reason, and it's your health which is at stake.

These things can recur, which is why you need to be checked out more often. I don't think it's worth risking your health for the sake of a five minute procedure.

HereComeTheGirls · 20/05/2008 09:47

actually, on rereading..i would try to talk to someone and find out if its an error that has led you to being recalled every 6 months, and if not then I would go...or if it is they can then change it to annual recalls!

berolina · 20/05/2008 09:48

Everyone goes annually in Germany. Gives me peace of mind.

SueW · 20/05/2008 10:23

It's not a quick procedure for everyone.

I have a cervix they can never find. I spend about 10 mins with my legs all over the place whilst they poke and prod and I do every relaxation technique I know to get through it and still end up with tears running down my face.

Fortunately I don't have to do it very often.

Twiglett · 20/05/2008 10:55

sounds familiar sue [sighs]

I have been recalled for the same reason (but yearly) for 9 years now. It was supposed to be for 5 years. TBH I just keep going and hopefully I just extra protected 6 monthly is a real pain though.
