Did your child have a heart murmour at birth, and if so did it go away?

Bit worried because dd had a heart murmour at birth, but was told it was very common. It's been a while since she last had it checked but it was better the last time than it was at birth. She has her 1 year check up soon, so I'll get it checked again to see if it's completely cleared or not.

I think it was on the scale of 6 or something that they measure it? At birth dd's was a 4 I think, then it went down to a 2 or 3. We're now hoping it's gone all together.

Just wondering if this is the case with anybody else? If so did it go away and how long did it take? If not, what happens then?

My dd had a heart murmur too. It was picked up at the 6 week check. Hers was caused by a Ventricular Septal Defect - a tiny hole between
the chambers. I was so worried about it, but when we went back to the hospital just after her first birthday, the hole had closed up
completely. Sorry I can't remember what number it was on the scale (it was 10 years ago!)

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking when they check it, it should be ok, they say they're pretty common amoungst newborn babies.

I'm still worried though.

Anybody else?

Can't be of much help, but you sound like you need a positive story. My 2 haven't, but my very good friend's daughter had one at birth that they (Drs) were VERY concerned about. I can't quite remember when it went away, but it was fairly young, and nobody ever had to do anything about it.

My ds had one- picked up the day after he was born- I was really upset naturally. had to go back for check up a couple of months later and it had disappeared. Apparently quite common, but don't remember a number although I remember I did know it at the time- obviously in the recesses of post birth brain!

My daughter's heart murmur was spotted during a routine visit to the GP when she was three-weeks-old.

She was scanned by two hospitals and they found she had a "moderately large Ventricular Septal Defect" and "two small Atrial Septal Defects".

In other words, three holes in the heart.

We were terrified.

They warned us she would probably have to have surgery to repair them when she was about two.

But, when she was six-months-old, she was scanned again and they told us the holes were closing by themselves and she would live to be 100.

Best day of our lives.

By the time she was one they had vanished.

I remember at the time being told heart murmurs were pretty common in little babies but that hers were much more serious than the norm.

I know exactly how you feel. It is absolutely hellish to be so powerless to help them.

Good luck. I'll be thinking of you.

My son has a heart murmur, picked up at birth. It's a scale 4 but cannot remember which sort - apparently it has a 'palpable thrill'! However he is now five and has no problems with it whatsoever. He had a check up last month and it is still there but is not causing any problems so does not have to be seen again for another two years. Just wanted to let you know that even if it doesn't go away, it can be lived with causing no problems. Only think we have to remember is if he has any surgery or dental treatment we have to inform the health care professional to give antibiotics.

My DS had a heart murmur, picked up at birth, he had to have check ups but it had gone by 2 yrs. He is now a very active teenager, into all sorts of sports and has never had a problem.

My dd had one which was found when she was born. She has always been underweight and has to go to hospital for that every three months where she has her heart listened to as well. Her heart murmur went when she was 11 months old.
