Does anyone else take amitrypyline?

And does it affect your waking life? I am on 150mg per day, plus I take citalopram for depression and ramipril for high blood pressure.

Can anyone medical/taking the same drugs tell me what degree of sedation/grogginess/brain fog is normal on this kind of dosage?

I took it for two years and finally begged to switch to Prozac because I couldn't deal with the cotton-wool head and dry mouth any more. I was also on 150mg iirc.

moodlumthehoodlum · 18/05/2008 12:10

I took it for a little while and it absolutely exhausted me. I felt like I just couldn't function, it was like taking a sleeping pill during the day. TBH though, i never made it past the point when these symptoms might have eased, so I'm not an expert.

what dosage were you on moodlumhoodlum, if you don't mind me asking?

Dr gave me a very low dose for insomnia, I had no side effects but the dose was significantly lower than yours. I am surprised you Dr gave you this? Mine said it is rarely used these days at higher doses because it overworks the mind and can cause serious sleep disturbances.

This is why he gave it to me, in small doses it worked on my REM sleep, to help me stay asleep during my dream phase. But if too high, it can overwork the dream phase, causing nightmares, sleep trouble.

Something like that. But I dont know, I am not Dr.

It worked for me, used it as a kick start for 3 months.

Pavlovthecat · 18/05/2008 12:21

Dr did however give me two weeks off as he said I may well experience side effects like being hungover, even on low dose (20mg?)

moodlumthehoodlum · 18/05/2008 12:25

A very very small one. will check. hungover is a good description of how i felt.

Greensleeves · 18/05/2008 12:25

I didn't know about the link with sleep disturbance, I sleep really badly and have nightmares a lot

i recently came off a very low dose of it (10mg) to help both sleep and IBS. i took it for about 2 months but even at such a low dose i felt dozy and took about an hour to be able to get up each morning, not good with an 18mo!
porbably not much help but i was told i would fell hungover, even at that dose.
good luck.

moodlumthehoodlum · 18/05/2008 12:40

I had 10mg. But I just couldn't do anything the following morning, and it became impractical, so I came off it (but on such a low dose, I think that's fine, I wouldn't recommend stopping it if you are on any more).

Weegiemum · 18/05/2008 12:54

I took it a long time ago for depression and it made me feel like my head was full of cotton wool. I couldn't get up in the morning. I was changed over to Imipramine, which wasnt quite so bad! Worst for me was dry eyes (as i wear contacts) and dry mouth.

I switched over to ssri as soon as they becme available as I hated all the side effects.

sue1911 · 18/05/2008 13:28

Hi, i took amitriptyline (50mg) for 2 years without any side effects. it is a sedative & muscle relaxant and should therefore be taken at bedtime.

You are on the maximum recommended dose of 150mg. On its own this would leave you feeling groggy but taking Citalopram (cipramil/celexa) WILL ENHANCE the effects of Ami.
It is not recommened that the two, amitriptyline is a tricyclic and citalopram is a SSRI, be taken together but many drs do and sometimes its ok .
i would suggest you see your GP again to discuss changing one of them.

Citalopram has a max dose of 60mg daily, but you havent said what your dose of that is.

hope this is of some help in explaining why you feel so bad/fogged

saltire · 18/05/2008 17:21

Is the amitryptiline for depression as well? if oyu don't mind me asking.
I take it (20/30mg) every nihgt, but mine is to help with the sleep problems associated with my Fibro. I try and take mine a good 1/2 before bed, it helps with sleep. I do get a dry mouth,a nd find that if I take it with the high does of co-codamol and Ibuprofen then I am like a zombie. it does give me a dry mouth, but I've never felt spaced out just taking it alone(i.e without painkillers as well)
It is a high dose you are on, especially with the Citalopram. I took that for PND when DS2 was born, and never again. Iwas hallucinating and everything

Greensleeves · 18/05/2008 17:24

Really, did the Citalopram cause problems? I hadn't thought of that, I'd assumed it was the amitriptyline

I'm on 150mg amitrip and 20mg Citalopram, plus a blood pressure medication called Ramipril. I do sometimes wonder how much it zombies me out and what I would be like if I wasn't stuffed full of pills... but I can't have the chronic anxiety back, it was HELL, and even the stuff I'm only taking only just keeps it at bay, I still have panic attacks sometimes.

I was given Chlorpromazine (sp) for sleep problems and Citalopram for depression. These two worked together brilliantly for me.

All the years I was on Amitriptyline I never felt clear headed.

mosschops30 · 18/05/2008 17:36

I took it for neuropathic pain for about a year. Didnt affect me during the day because I took it at night, but yes used to knock me out. Could you take it at night instead?

fizzbuzz · 18/05/2008 17:46

I was on 125mg for a bit. It made me forget things, but never felt hungover. It did slow me down a bit I suppose but not in any big way, and it was a good thing really as it calmed me down. Don't rememeber any problems like that on it TBH. It did make me very very paranoid and bad tempered though...unbelievably so in both cases.

Am now on 35 mg, for sleep and feel normal, no hangover stuff or anything

fizzbuzz · 18/05/2008 17:47

Take it early evening though about 7.30pm
