Diarrhoea after surgery!?

Kayannie123 · 24/04/2025 21:21

Hi guys, I had surgery last Wednesday and I’m currently having really bad diarrhoea 😞 I’ve really struggled with the gas they use to inflate your stomach up (keyhole surgery) I’m really bloated and don’t much of an appetite. The diarrhoea is has been happening for the past 3 days now, it’s literally like water that’s coming out 🫣 is this normal after surgery?? I’ve never had surgery before I don’t know what to expect

Are you on antibiotics?

ImDuranDuran · 26/04/2025 05:43

Hi OP, I’ve have keyhole a few times too and this is definitely ringing a bell with me. Were you under GA? I’m pretty sure this can be a post-surgery side effect.

Theunamedcat · 26/04/2025 05:50

Have you tried prebiotic/probiotic?

Kayannie123 · 26/04/2025 10:01

@ImDuranDuran hi yes it was, it’s definitely knocked me off my feet, it was the first time I’ve had it, it’s still made me feel very tired low and headaches, did you experience the same? X

It’s not unusual. Could be the drugs or related to the type of surgery.

Pigeonqueen · 26/04/2025 10:05

I would contact the ward you were on and ask their advice. If you are on antibiotics or were given some it may be that you may have developed c diff which may need treatment.

Kayannie123 · 26/04/2025 10:26

@AnotherVice hi no I’m not on antibiotics x

I'd be tempted to call the ward your were discharged from for further advice

Greybeardy · 26/04/2025 10:34

a few thoughts from an anaesthetist - you have to be pretty bold to give advice about abdominal distension and surprise bowel changes after abdomino-pelvic surgery without having access to a proper medical history, op note and being able to examine someone. Hopefully the fact that the OP is still posting means it's one of the less serious problems and is resolving, but there is no way to know from the limited info on here if there is any chance of the less common but potentially dangerous complications of surgery.

Kayannie123 · 26/04/2025 10:38

@Greybeardy oh god that sounds worrying. do I need to be worried? Because the discharge information that my surgeon gave me was that having diarrhoea isn’t on the serious complications list. Not being able to open your bowels or pass wind is on the list? So I don’t think it’s anything that’s serious

@Pigeonqueen hi, no I wasn’t on antibiotics. I was only in hospital just a day came home the same day, I can’t see myself picking up c diff in that short amount of time, hopefully not anyway x

Hi guys, the diarrhoea is easing off now. I did Google it and it does say on there it can be side effect of just having surgery. I’ve also being on blood thinning injections for a week I don’t know if anyone has experienced any side effects from this? My surgery involved having a cyst removed off my ovary but I did also have a small op on my bowel that I didn’t know about but the surgeon wanted to repair something when she saw it. She did say the surgery was successful and everything is back to normal? Do maybe a side effect from that. God knows

you've started two threads about it so you're clearly worried. You really need to take advice from an HCP in real life not on here - you need more detail to know if it is something expected or something more worrying. There is no way anyone on here can give safe advice online.

a small op on my bowel that I didn’t know about but the surgeon wanted to repair something

and there's the drip feed that illustrates why giving advice online is not usually appropriate.

Kayannie123 · 26/04/2025 10:52

@Greybeardy yes I know I need to seek advice and I only wanted to see if people have experience something similar that’s it.
