ADVICE NEEDED ON POLIO.

I would be realy grateful if anyone could give me some advise on polio.

Its a bit of a long story and probably one that belongs more to chat section but i wanted some proper medical advise if i can.

My sister who's 19 has recently moved in with her boyfriend and i have found out that they are not using any form of contraception, as he believe that he is infertile due to having Polio as a child. He is only 26 and has no other outward signs of having had polio.

Now i know that i may well get shot down here but .... I think he might be lying to get her pregnant, and yes i know that its none of my business realy but she is my sister and she is in love with him and thinks that the Sunshine's out of ever orifice. However the rest of the family are unsure about him and this latest bit of information has realy worried me.

He has lived all his life in the UK.

So what do you think is it possible or highly unlikely???? (That hes actualy had polio)

Maybe explain to her that it's not only pregnancy she needs to be using contraception for?

cktwo · 17/05/2008 14:19

Sounds a bit dodgy as polio has been eradicated in the UK for years. I'm not sure when they started vaccinating for it but my Dad contracted it as a child in the 50's and I think that was the last generation really to get it.

sweetbean · 17/05/2008 14:25

She has been seeing him for about a year now and has only stopped using contraception now that they have moved in together so i suppose she thinks she OK and the STD fount. Alto you can NEVER be 100% sure can you.

Take a look at this for more info

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polio_vaccine

cktwo · 17/05/2008 14:27

Also, the polio my Dad had didn't seem to affect his fertility !

garnettopaz · 17/05/2008 14:28

how old is he - unlikely to be polio but not impossible - depends where he went on holiday too - anyway polio is usually either asymptomatic or causes nerve damage i.e. paralysis i haven't heard of polio causing infertility but may be wrong - could he mean he had testicular mumps instead of polio since this may cause infertility - your sister may want to ask him if he's had the tests to confirm that really infertile!!!

cktwo · 17/05/2008 14:31

But all children in this country have been immunised for decades so it's highly unlikely he's contracted polio no matter where he's been on holiday

sweetbean · 17/05/2008 14:31

Thanks so much for all the advice! i know that i dose sound realy strange he is only 26 so i think he should have been vaccinated as a child.
cktwo im going to have a look at the link now thank you !! x

The more i look into this the more i think that its going to be pretty unlikely that he had has had Polio and that the only side affect that has occurred for him is the fact that he's infertile!!!! The thing is my sister will believe anything he Say's!

I would love to be wrong about this.

why do you think he might want to get her pregnant? Also, is it possible he may be infertile because of another reason but doesn't want to say? And, being upfront about him not being able to father children in the future perhaps, albeit the reason may not be strictly true.

Just a thought

sweetbean · 17/05/2008 14:57

DelGirl i know that you could be right but why lie about and make up such a elaborate excuse as Polio why not just be honest.

We have thought in the past that other things he as hold us have been really far fetched and just put it down to him being one of thoughts peole who love to elaborate a bit to much.

As to why i think he would won't to get her pregnant i think he would like to be a permanent part of are family and this would be a good way to do it !!

I sound like a bitch i know !!

no, i'm sure you're just looking out for her

Maybe he got an std? I don't know obviously but seems to a be a bit odd. Are your family rich or something, could that be a reason? If so, do you have any single brothers lol

artichokes · 17/05/2008 15:14

A friend of mine contracted Polio in the UK in the early 70s. The vaccine they used then caused the children to be contagious for a few days and before he was vaccinated he was put down for a nap with a child who had just been vaccinated. That child dribbled on him and my friend got Polio. So it could be true that your sister's boyfriend got it.

However, my friend has very obvious nerve damage from his Polio and is in a wheelchair. Despite this he has 3 kids.

Soooo even if you get Polio it does not seem to necessarily impact on your fertility.
