Food poisoning?

I have had diarrhoea since Sunday morning, early this morning I started passing blood so went to my GP who couldn’t really do much other than send of a sample. Been told I am very dehydrated so I got something from the chemist to drink but I feel awful. Managed a bit of toast today but that’s now gone through me. I can’t really afford to lose weight and I’m worried that I can’t keep any food inside me. GP said they can’t do much until stool sample comes back, this can take up to a week I believe? I was told not to take any Imodium and just to take paracetamol for the stomach cramps.

Can anyone reassure me that I will eventually stop going to the loo? How long can it last for?

Mine lasted 10 days (campylobacter)
I didn’t vomit but had a headache, temp and constant diarrhoea and cramps

I have had the head ache and temp too (thought more so at night), I feel a bit better in myself today but my bowels are still suffering. I’m so hungry but when I eat my stomach cramps and it goes straight through me. I haven’t been sick either but have felt sick (takes a lot to make me sick).

1 day of feeling rubbish/slight temperature; 3 days of water/dry toast going straight through me + no peeing as fluids went straight through too; about another week to regain appetite and stabilise digestion + peeing. Lost 2-3 kg but it's going back on with normal eating.

The only thing I wanted was full sugar coke and salted hula hoops so think I was craving the sugar and salt
it did improve quickly when I went on antibiotics

I’m craving crisps too, tried a few earlier after toast but they have gone through me. I don’t know if I should keep trying food or if I should stick to just fluids? GP told me to eat toast and bland food/soup.

Did you have to wait for test results before they gave you antibiotics?

They swabbed me in a&e so instant result (the doctor was querying sepsis and sent me there)
to be honest it didn’t matter what I ate, the upset stomach continued so I would just go with what you fancy but nothing too oily/spicy maybe?

Another night of stomach cramps and running to the loo. I have had to sleep downstairs close to the toilet and so I dont wake dd up. I haven't eaten since yesterday lunch time when I had a piece of toast and some salted crisps, I have probably been to the loo 30+ times since (how?). Waiting for a call back from GP to see if i should take my sample to A&E for a faster result. I dont think I can take many more days of this. The cramps have got worse and I've had no sleep. 4 days of going to the loo 50+ times a day. My poor poor bottom.

Sorry to hear that you are still suffering OP. I experienced this many years ago - never got to the bottom of what it was as GP surgery was useless, but I suspected food poisoning. Mine went on for 3 1/2 weeks. I was off work for over a month and lost 1 1/2 stone. The stomach pains went on longer, intermittently, although the diarrhea did stop. Initially I didn't eat anything, just drank water. Then I ate toast or tinned soup. Basically, anything bland. I've never felt so ill in my life, I honestly thought I was going to die. We were due to move house in the middle of it too - fortunately it was delayed (not by us) but I was so glad as there's no way I could have packed and driven the 1/2 hour journey!
But just wanted to say, I did eventually fully recover and haven't had another episode since.
Just keeping fluids going in and replacing salts and electrolytes is the important thing. Eat a little if you feel like it but make sure it's plain and bland. And when the diarrhea stops, get a good multi vitamin. My hair started falling out 3 months afterwards and my new, excellent GP said it was down to the depletion of vitamins and minerals during my illness.
Hope you feel better soon.

Spoke to my GP and got checked over. Different advice again, told not to eat anything other than dry toast. Before that I ate a banana which wasn’t too bad, went straight through me but not as water. Toast is not agreeing with me at all.

Been told I just have to ride it out and to call back Monday if I’m not better and if my test results haven’t come back.

Treating diarrhea with antibiotics is only done if you are really ill or immunocompromised, as treatment usually means you'll get better a bit quicker, but will continue to shed organisms for longer, which isn't a good thing.

I hope the test result comes back faster, it's usually only a few days once it's in the lab. And if it's something really important then the lab will Phone it out to your GP too

Hi what did this turn out to be? Hope you’re well. I have had similar recently and it was playing on my mind about the blood.
