I've had an issue with a tooth for 10 years. It gets recurrent abscesses. Usually every 18mths/2years it flares up. It needs root canal. They can't numb me. So no root canal. Can't remove it, same reason. They can't numb me as I react to local with adrenaline in, so they have to use local without (it drops my BP, I have a vasovagel, and faint). The local without just doesn't numb me. I've perplexed dentists who can't understand how I can't be numb, but it is what it is. It's NHS, I don't have money for private.
So, the tooth is currently in flare up. Normally it starts, gets really bad after the first day, get the antibiotics, end up in a&e that night for pain relief as it truly is unmanageable pain, then by the next night the antibiotics have kicked in and otc pain relief helps and it settles down within the next day.
Except currently I'm still in agony on Saturday, after the pain started Monday night. Got antibiotics Weds morning (dentist agreed to refer me on nhs for sedation for removal finally), ended up in a&e weds night, had oramorph and PR diclofenic. Got GP to prescribe the same on Thursday morning. So I'm taking oramorph, paracetamol and PR diclofenic. Plus Amoxicillin and Metronidazole. I can't function between the pain when it returns (as it does an hour before next meds are due) and the side effects of the pain relief. I spent yesterday from 7am-3pm vomiting. I'm leaking faeces (yeah, I know, how awful. Never ever had an issue there before!) since yesterday too. So today I've not been able to put the PR diclofenic in.
I'm a mess. I can't think straight. Oh, and I can't eat properly either. I'm on annual leave this week, and luckily my partner is a teacher so is off with the kids. But I need to get better and fast! I've called the emergency dental line this morning at 8am, and been given an appt for tomorrow. I've no facial swelling or anything, but surely something isn't right? What can be done to get rid of this pain without me having to be on such strong pain relief that I'm unable to function? What can the dentist even do? Please advise if you have knowledge of what is going wrong here?!
