Low iron?

Hi,

I had my bloods done last week due to me feeling tired all the time, run down and just general bleurgh. Anyway they have come back and the GP has said they are all normal and no further action… however I’ve looked on the NHS app and my Serum Ferritin Level (which I presume is my iron) is 18 u/gL. This sounds low to me as to what it should be?

Can anyone shed some light please? Would i benefit from a supplement? And would this explain my tiredness etc.

That is quite low. Ideally they should be at least 50, preferably 100+

Mine fell to under 3 and my GP told me all was 'normal'. This went on for over 3 years, I couldn't climb my stairs without seeing stars.

I needed infusions in the end as supplements just could not raise the levels. I also needed a uterine ablation as heavy periods were the cause of my low iron stores.

There are some good iron protocol groups on FB. Many recommend haem iron supplements taken every other day or every third day.

Thank you, I will have a look at some group on Facebook and will also look into supplements. I did think 18 sounded very low but couldn’t understand as it said ‘normal and no further action’ at the top!!

18 micrograms bis very low for Ferritin.
About 8 or 9 years ago, I had levels less than 5 (3 separate blood tests, with samples taken on 3 separate occasions over 2 days).
My GP prescribed ferrous fumerate supplements (cheaper OTC than prescription) 3 x day and blood tests every 3 months. It took 18 months for my ferritin to reach 50.
