Hi everyone,
I have my smear test booked for tomorrow. I have found them extremely uncomfortable in the past and have been putting this one off for years.
Doctors has given me 10mg of diazepam. Question is.. has anyone taken diazepam for smear test before? How long before the appointment did you take it. My doc said 30min but pharmacist said an hour.
How did it make you feel.?
Feeling very anxious..
Thanks in advance.

I haven't taken Diazepam for a smear as I don't find them too uncomfortable, but I have taken Diazepam for other reasons - root canal and other dental treatment, hysteroscopy and a colonoscopy. For the dental work, I took it about half an hour before and the other procedures, around 45 minutes before. The time difference was due to the travelling distance - I took the medication just before leaving the house and the dental surgery is closer to home than the hospital.

I took 5mg each time. I was a bit 'spaced out', fairly relaxed and I'm sure the Diazepam made the procedures far more bearable than without.

Do you have anyone to go with you?

10mg for your first time trying them is quite high. You could try taking one this evening and see how you feel on it if you want to test it out before tomorrow. I've not taken it for a smear either but I've taken it for flying, dentist and hospital appointments, I've only ever taken the 2mg though, it really helped take the edge off my anxiety and made me feel like things were more manageable, didn't feel drowsy or spaced out because of the low dose.

I get prescribed 5mg diazepam now and then as I have an anxiety disorder. 10mg is high if you’ve not had them before, you will be relaxed and probably a bit spaced out. And you’ll probably fall asleep when you get home. Don’t drive yourself to the appt, I wouldn’t if it was my first time. Certainly not on that dose. Have you got someone who can take you?

Sorry I should have said I was prescribed 5mg probably 9 years ago but it did nothing for me, my last smear was 6 years ago and I took 10mg, felt a bit light headed and although uncomfortable I managed to have the test done.
Now I can't remember if how long before the test I took it.
I actually want to feel spaced out, the feeling gas and air gives you. My husband will go with me. Iv had this appointment booked for 2 weeks now and Iv had sleepless nights just thinking about it.
It's at 12.30 tomorrow I think il take the 10mg at 11.45 and hope by 12.30 it's worked.

I feel your pain!

10mg at 11.45 should be enough to take the edge off for sure.

Good luck

I got diazepam for my hysteroscopy. Was told to take it 30 minutes before my appointment.

I get 2mg diazepam for occasional anxiety and take it for my smear test. What I'll say is if you're not used to it (and 10mg is high) do a trial run first. You won't be able to.drive or think much for rest of day after you take it ime.

I would take half a 2mg for smear just to help get through it. About half hour before.

Make sure you've got someone to collect you and nothing else to do that day xx

I should have said that my dosage was only 2mg.

ETA Was first prescribed it by my GP when my DH died. At first was only taking 1mg. A nurse friend advised that I needed the full 2mg.

Hi everyone.
Thanks for all your replies.
So glad its over. I took the 10mg of diazepam at 11.50 by 12 I started feeing light headed and relaxed.
I would describe the feeling similar to gas and air. Nurse was really nice talked me through the process and took it slow. The only discomfort was when the speculum opened but im I held my husbands hand and bruised it. Again with breathing techniques it was over in say 3 minutes.
If anyone is putting it off because of anxiety then please ask for low doze of diazepam and get the test done. If I can do it then anyone can! X
