Poo sample results...how long?

I've had repeated and extreme diarrhoea for 12 days now - it started suddenly whilst abroad, continued for 5 days, resolved abruptly, and apparently completely, at the weekend...... for a full 36 hours before it started again with a vengeance!

I've dropped a sample off at my GP practice today, but just wondered if anyone knows what a lab would test for and how long it takes to get any results? The GP said from my description of symptoms that it sounds like it could be campylobacter but obviously won't prescribe anything to treat it until they know what it is.

I'm really, really fed up with it now. It's uncomfortable, sleep disruptive (it's worse at night for some reason) and I feel drained and wobbly.

Any advice much appreciated.

I had results back within 4-5 days recently. I have the NHS app & they appeared on there.
I’ve previously had similar to you (a few years ago) after being abroad, had to do a sample then as well but the GP phoned me within a few days as I’d got Cryptosporidium- that took around a month to finally go. I had days where I thought everything was fine & then it’d suddenly come back, mine was worse at night as well- also dripping with sweat so must have had a temperature. Hope you feel better soon!

@Curioustoknow1

Thank you so much for the info, you do start to think you're going round the (u)bend, don't you!

It took a week for mine (Mon till Mon), it was looking for campylobacter and other infections (sorry can't remember which). It was negative. I was lightheaded, diarrhoea, no appetite, sweating and palpitations. Blood tests didn't find anything either and I was fine after a couple of weeks. Goodness knows what it was!
