What on earth was this?!

Have name changed for this as it’s just so gross - I want to distance myself from it entirely.
last week, after I’d done a poo (I feel like a three year old writing this!) wiped myself and there was on the paper what looked like a piece of undigested, peeled carrot. It was flat, at a guess a few cm long and about half a cm wide or so. Anyway I stared at it in total confusion for a few seconds, wondering when I’d eaten some carrot peel when suddenly whatever it was curled up - kind of both ends came together into a small spiral. Anyway I was totally disgusted and threw it down the toilet. Googled worms afterwards but nothing seems to remotely fit? any idea what on earth it could be?
i don’t normally mind going to the doctor about ‘embarrassing’ things but really find this beyond the pale and also can’t bear the thought of telling dh about it - it’s so gross.

You’re going to have to tell your husband OP, as everyone in your house will need to be treated for worms. Do you have children? If so you likely got it from them. It’s not all that uncommon. Get it sorted soon, you’ll be okay.

That sounds too big to be a threadworm. Have you got any other symptoms?

Saisong · 09/04/2025 23:59

Sounds like a tapeworm. The segments can 'move' independently. Get a worming treatment 🪱

PickAChew · 10/04/2025 00:00

Tapeworm looks like bits of rice. You definitely need treating.

SnugNightsss · 10/04/2025 00:07

Definitely sounds like tapeworm. A family member had it after travelling abroad. Docs gave medication to treat.

EBearhug · 10/04/2025 01:06

You need a good worm treatment. You need to treat everyone in the house, and any cats or dogs. You also need to wash all bedding, ideally on a hot wash.

But it is treatable, so you'll be fine.

Thank you everyone. Your messages gave me a wake up call.
so have told dh who wasn’t disgusted but more a bit surprised I hadn’t done anything about it straight away. Am now sat in a doctors waiting room waiting to see GP.

What did the GP say?

Did it curl in a creature like way, or curl like a leaf?

I’d assume it was a large piece of pepper or tomato skin myself.

Austenpirate123 · 10/04/2025 19:51

@Foxgloverr GP said it didn’t sound like threadworms. Have sent off a stool sample…the glamour continues!

@myplace it kind of curled up very definitively, in a very decided way if that makes sense. Curled up quite small - a bit like a fortune teller fish if you remember those, but much tighter curl.
I did really think ‘could it just be a bit of food that for some reason curled up’ but I can’t see how that could be.

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 10/04/2025 20:01

Are you absolutely sure you didn't eat a fortune fish?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/04/2025 20:16

Are you in the UK? very unlikely to be a tapeworm unless you've been properly abroad. I work in microbiology and we regularly get stuff sent it. In almost 20 years it's turned out to be something only once. And they had been abroad.

It's probably vegetable based

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/04/2025 20:17

Tapeworm segments are much bigger and thicker than you imagine, threadworms are slim, white and about 4mm long, sounds like a bit of rolled up tomato skin tbh

Austenpirate123 · 10/04/2025 20:31

But it actually moved in front of my eyes?! Why would a piece of vegetable do that?!
@PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe fairly sure!!!
