High Blood pressure tablets and erectile dysfunction?

Hi, no point changing my name even though I feel slightly about this problem, as no one knows me anyway

DH had to start taking aprilnal (sp?) for high blood pressure and started to have slight erections issues. He ran out of pills and hence didnt take any for 3 days and duringthat time everything went back to normal iykwim. Anyway, went to dr's and mentioned it today and was told it's not a side effect dr is familiar with as even though said could cause sexual problems in side effects blurb, Dr himslef had never heard this forst hand from any of his patients.

So they have changed his medications to Valsartan (his BP was back to normal with the Aprilnal though)

I was just wondering of anyone elses Dh has been on tablets for high blood pressure and if they had any problems such as these? Or if any dr's know? I am wondering if the erectile problems were pschosymatic as he seemed very concerned when he initially read the medication blurb. And to be hinest I am getting a bit fed up of having to make that extra effort to to get things going iyswim

Hi

I used to sell viagra and was an expert on erectile dysfunction (ED)

BP drugs can have a huge impact on ED and prop the reason why this happened.

BUT the thing is it is hugely important that he takes the BP drugs too as these will prevent heart attacks etc.

the GP can obv change his bp drug, which he has, but this needs to get the bp down to its target level, if the other durg aprilnal gives him adequate lowering but gives him ED, he can take viagra which will help him get and maintain an erection.

He needs to try a few to see what best suits him.Viagra can be dangerous though for cardiac conditions so unless he knows his heart is 100% i wouldn't touch it.BP tablets do affect libido in men and women and it is a pain

Yes a good friend's (well obviously if she is telling me about ED ) partner has ED caused by BP meds - not sure which one though. Much frustration ensued - he is much older though.

Viagra is only dangerous and contraindicated when taken with nitrates or GTN spray.

Thank you for your replies.

I guess we will see how he goes on the new medication for now. He has an appointment witht he dr in 2 weeks to check the new drugs are working as well as the previous ones. I know it is getting him down (no pun intended!) though as he is not used to this at all and has always been very err virile in that department and has been rather maudalin since the Dr told him he will be on BP meds for the rest of his life now.

I thought it was also dangerous in certain conditions as it increases blood flow and opens up arteries which can be dangerous in some heart conditions which can be undiagnosed
