Throat lump

Recently found a lump in the small hollow triangle area at the base of the neck which becomes visible and moves up and down when swallowing. I’ve been to my gp and seen a locum who was less than helpful stating they couldn’t feel anything but didn’t actually go anywhere near the area of the lump. Has anyone experienced this in a similar sort of area. Think I need to go back to the gp again but feel like I’m going to get fobbed off again

It sounds like a thyroid lump. They’re common and usually benign but need checking out. Your GP should have referred you on the 2 week pathway for an ultrasound scan. Can you see the lump or just feel it? I have a thyroid lump just in the location you describe. Mine is a cyst and doesn’t require treatment unless it gets massive. I’ll share a picture… I’m swallowing here so it’s moved up but usually sits lower.

The lump is slightly smaller than yours and more central than yours but is definitely visible when swallowing. Have symptoms of hyperthyroid so booked in for bloods but my nhs app says there’s absolutely no lump. Definitely going to ask to be seen by a regular gp I think

I had one a few years ago. Was referred for ultrasound and bloods. Ultrasound said it was a complex cyst and gp referred me to ent. They said it was very likely to be benign but I could have it removed which I did. Very easy surgery but I have a small scar which I don’t notice. It was benign but I’m glad I had it removed.
most often they are cysts or nodules but there is always the small chance of thyroid cancer so you must push to have it scanned.

i think this is a regular problem with my gp surgery as I have been fobbed off on multiple occasions in regards to myself and my children’s health. Potentially need to look at a different practice. Going to sort out an appointment for next week and if I’m not taken seriously will consider going down the private route

My tsh has come back at 0.49 (normal ranges of 0.52-4.3) and my t4 is normal. Does this make my thyroid overactive? Haven’t seen or heard from a gp only seen results on the app

Your TSH is just below normal range, which could indicate overactive thyroid/hyperthyroidism. As your T4 is normal your GP may advise retesting in a few months. But as you have a neck lump it really needs investigating. If your GP says they can’t see or feel the lump, could you ask to see a different GP at your practice?
