Vit B12 deficiency?

Wondering if that’s why I keep getting mouth ulcers, pins and needles in my hands, feeling tired, not sleeping well. Anyone with similar symptoms? I’m not vegan but don’t eat meat very often.

Yes, me too. I'm now on B12 injections. The pins and needles have subsided and apparently I may even feel a general improvement once my current Crohns/UC flare up is under control.

CaptBirdsEar · 08/04/2025 19:09

I was thinking g of getting some vitb12 drops from the chemist to see if I improve.

@CraftandGlamour how much b12 is reccomended for vegan I take the Holland and Barrett multi tabs for vegans they have b12. It says 10 ug
but I dont have any sleep issues or pins and needles

If the reason for your B12 deficiency is because you lack "intrinsic factor" ( not quite sure what that means, but apparently it's what I've got "pernicious anemia") then a tablet will not help at all.

As I understand it in my case I cannot absorb VB12 through my stomach.

A better alternative is a B12 spray into the side of your mouth can help, but injections are better.

I’m just self diagnosing as the ulcers and pins and needles aren’t something I’ve had before. I know I don’t eat as well as I used to since I’ve been on my own.

I wouldn't know. I was recently prescribed B12 injections, which I now get every 12 weeks. (After a loading dose taken six times over two weeks).

Might be

I had pins and needles with my b12 deficiency. Unless you are vegan it’s unlikely to be dietary and a supplement would be pointless if the issue is absorption. I’d get a b12 test before looking at supplements

I get 8 weekly jabs, my dr said that was what was needed once neurological symptoms such as pins and needles have developed. May be worth speaking to your dr?

Vitamin b12 injections .. you need folic acid for absorption.
I buy mine from Germany.. works out about a £1 each vial.
Syringes too.
In UK palors etc charge £30 each.
I SI one every week.
I used to get up to 30 mouth ulcers a month.
Don't go on GP/ NICE guidelines.. they are not accurate.
I suggest joining a b12 forum.
You can't overdose on b12.. anything your body doesn't need comes out in your urine .
B12 has hundreds of benefits.

Ahh, interesting. I'll bear that in mind. Currently dealing with a long and serious Crohns flare so I'll ask the gastro about that.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 08/04/2025 22:47

Yes I take folate as well as the B12 jabs

Coeliac disease can be the underlying cause of low B12, worth asking for a blood test for that as well as B12.

christmas00stressballs · 09/04/2025 02:16

If you’re UK you can gwt tested for a B12 deficiency. I was tested but they said my b12 was fine it was lack of iron.

CraftandGlamour · 09/04/2025 08:45

Yes, I take both B12 injections and I'm now on iron supplements but
I have Crohn's/UC so gut health and absorption are known issues.
