Any dentists about or GPs? Small hard lump roof of mouth

Hello,

I am looking for a bit of advice and perhaps perspective please. I know little about oral anatomy. I have a 4mm hard/firm lump on the location marked by the circle. Is this the hard or soft palate , or the junction between the two? Is this where small salivary glands are?

It looks like nothing on a photo but is palpable, like a small hard pea. The skin covering it is totally healthy. There is a small pink mark but I think this is from my rubbing it.

I noticed it on Wednesday when I yawned and felt a slight localised pulling sensation (no pain) and put my finger in my mouth to feel where the pulling feeling was. There is no pain at all. Not even when pressing it hard.

It doesn’t have a blistery, fluid filled sack on it like the pictures of “mucoleles” I can find online.

Do I need to go a see someone and if so would it be Gp or dentist (nothing wrong with my teeth at all). How long should I leave it before seeing someone?

please don’t reply saying “Why are you posting on mumsnet, nobody can diagnose you on here” - I know that. Also I know that the photo doesn’t really show anything so please don’t comment saying there is nothing there - there is a small hard lump

I’m not sure re CAT scan date as I have to go back to my insurance company with his letter, get authorisation, should maybe have something booked in the next few days. I wish I didn’t have to go actually as it just keeps the suspense feeling going for a bit longer.

Did you get referred to oral surgery or max fax ? Just wondered if you can ring them to get an idea of waiting times. I know it’s totally shit waiting. Try not to worry it’s much more likely to be a blocked gland than anything serious.

Just looked at your pic again and it’s so similar to mine!

Keep me updated with your scan and how things go! I know what you mean though as it’s more waiting around isn’t it it’s draining! I’ve been referred to max fax I’m going to ring them tomorrow and go from there! I have got a more up to date picture and it’s gone more like the colour of the roof of my mouth I’ll add it

Thats interesting. I wonder if it is a salialoth, salivary gland stone. I’ve seen one in a major salivary gland in the floor of the mouth. They do occur in minor glands in the palate and are probably fixed. It would explain the change in size from time to time. It will be interesting to see the CT scan.
Stones feel just like bone and block the duct.
Bony tori are fascinating and do suddenly appear. Usually they leave them unless they cause functional problems. They sometimes grow out into the floor of the mouth forming a shelf under which food becomes trapped and impinge on tongue attachment so can affect eating.

He said he will try and send me the images from the scan so if at all possible I will post them here! It’s certainly very curious.

Hello, just wanted to update that I received a copy of the report that my consultant sent to the insurers-he has recommended a CT scan to do differentiate between a bony prominence of the hard pallet or an osteoma. (Which I have obviously googled and it says it’s benign so I’m not panicking.)

I’m so glad you’ve been given a good outcome hopefully the CT scan will be quick so you know for definite! I called about my referral but got told I’m on the routine waiting list which can take up to a year, I’m trying not to be concerned about it as I would imagine if my dentist was concerned it would’ve been quicker

Sportacus17 · 30/05/2025 13:57

Yes definitely, especially if it’s not changing much or painful. If the dentist has any concerns they would have done an urgent referral xx

Hi @Leah1204 how are you doing? I had my CT scan on Wednesday so should have the results mid next week. My lump is still the exact same x

Leah1204 · 14/06/2025 12:18

Hi lovely, keep me updated with your results! Mine is still the same and it hasn’t got any bigger but I’m trying not to worry too much I’m just annoyed it’s going to take so long for me to get it checked. Sometimes it feels smaller and then other times it feels like more of a lump it’s draining haha x

Leah1204 · 07/08/2025 08:43

Hello @Sportacus17 how are you getting on any new news? Mine is still there but it looks like a spot, still waiting to hear about getting it checked, hope you’re doing well x

Hi,

I am so sorry I didn’t update sooner. It took ages for me to get my results and then we went on holiday and have just got back. My CT scan showed the lump to be a bony lump. No sign of tumour or anything untoward. “Part of my anatomy” the consultant said in the end! I’m just trying to load your pic

Sportacus17 · 08/08/2025 11:44

On yea I can see the paler coloured “head” , is that a new feature ? Is it still unpainful? Yours could be the blocked salivary gland thing or maybe a very slowly developing cyst? Mine is still 100% the same and hard.

OP posts:
Leah1204 · 08/08/2025 12:00

the paler head has been like this for a while now but there’s no pain and it’s never got any bigger, I’m still on the waiting list so would be next May that I get an appointment

Sportacus17 · 08/08/2025 12:10

It’s a good sign it’s not got bigger … plus I don’t think tumours have “heads” so it’s all looking good for you! I know her nerve racking it is… Even though the consultant was completely unconcerned about mine. I still have moments where I think about it and wish it wasn’t there just in case they have missed something… But at least I’m not checking it 500 times a day now. Only once every few days! Please keep in touch XX

OP posts:
Leah1204 · 08/08/2025 12:17

I’m not stressing about it as much as I was but it’s still in the back of my mind! I’m glad you’re feeling reassured about yours hopefully I will see my dentist again soon and they may know more, I’ll definitely keep you updated xx

Huskers1010 · 05/09/2025 02:13

Just looking for a little advice I see my dentist next week other dentists have seen this little white spot I have hard bump but have not said anything about it anyone else had this before I'll try to get a good picture thank you

Sportacus17 · 14/01/2026 09:30

Hi @Leah1204 did you ever get to the bottom of your mouth lump? Mine is still there, exactly the same. Hard as bone, no changes at all…

OP posts:
Leah1204 · 14/01/2026 20:39

Hi lovely @Sportacus17 still waiting for an appointment I chased them again and they said because it’s not urgent it will be around May this year but it’s still the exact same, never changed and it is still the same size so really unsure of what it is! It started as an ulcer so not sure if it’s just never healed properly it’s very small and doesn’t feel like bone it’s just there haha!

Sportacus17 · 15/01/2026 09:07

Oh that’s great that it hasn’t grown or changed ! As I get older I’ve developed a few lumpy bits in various parts of my body which I get checked out… and if I’m told they are fine and they don’t grow I try my best to ignore them. Definitely right to get it checked as a cautious measure. Can’t believe you’ve had to wait so long!

Leah1204 · 15/01/2026 18:46

@Sportacus17 Im terrible when I find a new lump somewhere the anxiety it causes is dreadful I’ve had so many more things happen since the one in my mouth arrived haha! I think it’s because my dentist isn’t concerned so she’s told them I can wait the non urgent referral it’s annoying but I’m glad my dentist isn’t worried!

Leah1204 · 20/02/2026 16:22

Hello @Sportacus17 I finally had an appointment a couple of days ago she had a feel and said she isn’t concerned about it at all especially as it hasn’t grown or anything. She didn’t actually tell me what she thought it was so not actually any further forward but suppose it’s nothing to worry about I guess haha x

Sportacus17 · 20/02/2026 22:32

Oh that’s good news - thanks for the update . Sorry you’ve had to wait so bloody long!!!!
