i have some dihydrocodine but i don't want to take them as they knock me out a bit.
i have to go get the script from the doctors and as it is morphine i have to sign for it and then sign again at the chemist, we did use the delivery service once and they didn't deliver the one med steve needed on the day cos they had to order one other med so they thought they would wait until they had them all
i am happier to go and get them and know that they are sorted.
i am wondeing about trying some gel for my back, anyone got any suggestions?

onlyjoking9329 · 16/05/2008 09:34

Lapin the bubble bath will help i am sure, i have given up with the radox destress cos it doesn't seem to work

ShinyPinkShoes · 16/05/2008 09:34

Ibupbrufen gel might be worth a go.

Would seeing an osteopath/physio or having a massage do you any good? xxx

squiffy · 16/05/2008 09:35

OJ - I have a slightly deformed back so I can offer practical advice.

Diclofenac is good. IME it works far far better if you take it in 75mg suppository form - seems to me to be about twice as powerful that way and also helps avoid potential side effects on stomach. Drs are IME happy to subscribe that way if you ask. 50mg suppositories also good.

Diclofenac also comes in gel form over the counter at the chemist (as voltarol) but I haven't found anywhere near as much as suppositories.

If your back problems are due to muscle spasms or contracted muscles, then it is also an idea to ask the doctor for diazepam (valium) which is one of the strongest muscle-relaxants available outside of hospital. Because these are also anti-depressants you may want to take them only at night because they do have a slight zombie effect (you won't notice this if you have a clear 3-4 hour sleep after taking them).

If the pain gets too bad then you want to ask for some tramadol for night-time use only.

whispywhisp · 16/05/2008 09:35

I find the cold spray version really good. Its the cold equivalent to Deep Heat. Its called Deep Freeze - It freezes pain instantly and has a menthol cooling action (according to the front of the can) and whenever I've used it its been brill!

squiffy · 16/05/2008 09:38

I menat to say nowhere near as good ...

Also for about £15 in Boots you can get a wrap that goes round you into which you can insert either deep heats or deep freezes (I alternate from one to the other) - you can wear them all day and night and they are fabulous and worth the money (and I am happy to post you mine if you cat me)

berolina · 16/05/2008 09:39

I have no idea about gel myself but shall have a look at chemist when i pick up ds1 later. Only I am in Germany so it would take forever to get to you but I will have a look.

Thinking of you.

squiffy · 16/05/2008 09:39

Duh. am running ahead of myself again - you don't use deep heat patches, you insert gel pouches into them (you freeze or microwave them). I have these too if you want?

onlyjoking9329 · 16/05/2008 09:42

i will see about the diclofenac gel,i will have a word with Jo the pharmacist i see her quite often! i have a wrap belt thing that has a bag in it you can heat or freeze but not and help i have a cherry stone bag too which you heat up, it feels nice and cosy but doesn't help the pain.

solo · 16/05/2008 10:00

Of course I have no idea what the exact problem is with your back, but when I was 4.6 months pg, I put my back out and was away from home at the time. Couldn't walk! but I got a heat belt(one of those that you take out of a wrapper and it heats up)and used tiger balm too. That night I was dancing the night away, so it may help you out a bit? my dad uses them too now and is very impressed.
Hope all is as ok as it can be.
Lurked a bit, but not a poster...I get too emotional about your pain, especially your emotional pain. Hope everything is calm.xxx

NotABanana · 16/05/2008 10:19

oj, my dh broke his leg v v badly a couple of years ago, and also had a herniated disc and sciatica last summer (prob cos of his leg!). he uses Tramadol Hydrochloride to help when he has pain, on prescription from the doc. you can get it in several strengths i think. he finds them v effective, although they do take a little while to kick in.

hope you have a peaceful day today and the out in-laws visit last night was bearable and without major incident. how are the children?
love hugs and prayers, Dxx

OJ, if you arent a full body massage person then i recommend just a bit of reflexology. my god i never slept so well after the session i had at the hospice pre-transplant.

WanderingTrolley · 16/05/2008 10:50

Oh good idea misdee. When your massage therapist shows up, you can always ask that they just do your head/arms/hands/feet.

lapin is bound to have better luck at googling than me - you'd be surprised at what constitutes a massage. Some of the 'services' I found weren't entirely appropriate. "I am very broadminded and can be clothed or naturist" said one chap. I took his number.

Are there any mners who are or know massage therapists in the East Midlands?
