Thinking about reflexology - what to expect?

Have booked in for reflexology this week, my first time. Feeling quite nervous! If anyone has had this can you tell me exactly what happens and how it was for you pls? x

Underwhelming. I was really looking forward to it but it wasn't relaxing, a bit painful and I had a headache afterwards.

Mbnortheast · 30/03/2025 18:58

Ah, that's disappointing. But I have heard reflexologists can vary quite a bit. Maybe your therapist wasn't very good? Was hoping to feel pampered....

I was blown away. I could feel bits of me 'hurting' although I was also super relaxed.

Afterwards, without me saying anything, she was able to tell me all the areas of resistance (for a better word) that I felt while she was doing it.

I'd do it again if I could.

Ilovelowry · 30/03/2025 19:01

I should say I had it as part of a massive attempt to get back to Health after a big surgery in the summer. So I needed all the relaxation I could get.

Crocmush · 30/03/2025 19:03

I've had quite a few sessions. Very relaxing. I usually fell asleep!

Sidebeforeself · 30/03/2025 19:03

It’s bunkum. They’ve added an ology at the end to give it some scientific vibe. But there could be a placebo affect I suppose.Same with reiki.

Umthisisabitawkward · 30/03/2025 19:06

I had reflexology about 10 years ago. If your experience is anything like mine, expect to fall asleep after about 10 minutes 😆 After 3 or 4 sessions I figured I could sleep at home and not have to pay £40-odd for the privilege, so I gave it up 😆

Beachbodyready · 30/03/2025 19:08

I love it. I carry stress in my feet so I enjoy it as a relaxing massage. The rest is bunkum.

I haven't had reflexology but I have been to demonstrations ( in a professional interest capacity )

TBH if you are looking for relaxing you might well be disappointed .It's been used for thousands of years as a diagnostic so they use a firm pressure . And headache is a potential side effect .

Interesting - seems quite a mixed bag! I guess only my own experience will tell. Feeling a bit self-conscious about my feet, been trying to make them nice half the afternoon - I mean therapist will be up close and personal with them, right?!

Yes, they most certainly will!

I thought it was bunkum, my feet told my therapist nothing and I didn't feel any different. She was so highly recommended too & has degrees coming out of her ears. Lovely but, no, not for me.

Ah love you - your therapist will have seen more feet than you can shake a stick at .
Just make sure they are clean.
Don;t put talcum powder on - the Reflexologist I watched used talc to reduce friction but some might use oil .

Noperope · 30/03/2025 19:46

@Mbnortheast I'm a massage therapist. As long as your feet are clean we don't care how they look 🙂

Titasaducksarse · 30/03/2025 19:49

I trained in it years ago but dont practice. For those who say it is bunkum, whilst training I correctly identified a person had no spleen from their foot alone...literally their spleen point felt like nothing under my thumb!
I personally don't find it relaxing ...but I don't with any complimentary therapies. They exhaust me or make me have an emotional response.

Mbnortheast · 30/03/2025 20:41

Thanks ladies, great to hear your experiences. Am intrigued to see how it will go for me now! Going to do my best to get there with clean feet, but going straight from work so she'll have to take me as I come! 😝

Reflexology annoys me because I think it's woo, but it works on me. V annoying 😁. Sometimes it's relaxing, sometimes it makes me cry, it always makes my whole body respond, and I always feel more ...centred? Together? After a session. So it's like a bloody good foot rub plus therapy for me, without having to talk about my feelings...

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 31/03/2025 10:19

I had it as a free add on to a massage. Most relaxing experience of my life.

Shetlands · 31/03/2025 10:21

Reflexology is just foot-woo but there are benefits to having a good foot massage as part of a pedicure, which is probably cheaper as there's no ology at the end.

Definitely not foot woo for me.

I could feel my ovaries cramping and my ear popping.

I was massively aware of areas of tension.

So I went today. The lady was lovely and put me at ease, which was just as well because I was wearing tights which was embarrassing (have to for working on an airline)! Luckily, she didn't seem to mind my slightly hot feet at all and did her thing and it was amazing. Picked up some stuff about my shoulders and digestion which rang true. So relaxing, didn't want it to end! How can some of you not like this?! 😌

So glad you liked it! I found it relaxing too.

Mine picked up problems with my ovaries and she also said my ear kept popping. I have glue ear and a blocked sinus and both areas really hurt while she was rubbing those parts of my feet. I think it's incredible that they can tell this.

FWIW. I had loads of dry skin on my feet and hadn't painted my toenails as I wasn't long recovered from a hard surgery. I don't think they care!
