Hi

we have just had our 6 week check with our GP and I am a bit confused as I am first time mum.

GP didnt check me at all just gave me a presecription for the pill, I have stiches which i did go and see her about as they were very uncomfortable and she gave me some cream so I thought that she would of at least checked to see if they were ok.

As for Olivia she only checked her eyes breathing and hips, I thought that she would weigh and measure her at least!

Is this normal for the check to be so brief? When the midwife was here she told me to book a 20 minute appointment!!

xx

My GP was crap too. No checking of me whatsoever. I wouldn't recommend it, you need to be examined.
The baby check was better. eyes, breathing, hips, grip. She gave her loads of love at the same time which was nice to see. The Health Visitors do the weighing/measuring. At my GPs the HV did this while you were waiting for GP. Go to the HV clinic or give her a call and ask her to come and see you if you are concerned.
I would go back re your exam though. You need your stitches looked at. (I ended up with an infection in mine). I was lucky as my HV was brill and when I told her I was uncomfortable she had a quick look (I know she's not trained for that) but she said go to GP asap.

Most Gps don't do a formal check as such of mums now unless there are specific problems, your stitches should have healed and dissolved now, if you are still sore then you should go back. But generally 6 weeks after the birth there isn't normally anything to check per se, your body is designed to give birth and will getback to normal accordingly. Baby check is usually as you say but normally checking reflexes too. Weights and measures are left up to HV when you take baby to clinic, the owness is on you to have DD weighed reguarly.

6 week check should be like this:
mum - ask about mood/contraception/smear/has lochia stopped
ideally do bp, feel tummy to make sure uterus contracted, offer to look at perinuem (most people refuse you would know if youhad an infection as it would be sore)
general chat about how finding being new mum ( i love doing this bit picked up lots of tips while pregnant!)

baby
ask about hearing pooing feeding smiling
HV often do weight and length and head circumference

exam should be top to toe - start at head
feel fontanelle, make sure no neck movement restriction, look in eyes for red reflex (important) look for cleft palate - so open mouth
listen to heart and chest
feel tummy
look at umbilical scar
feel for hernias and femoral pulse (in groin)
check hips
check moro reflex and head control
feel testes look at genitalia for abnormalities
look at hands and feet

thats what should be done as a minimum
a lot can be done very quickly and your gp may be ultra efficent and checked stuff without you noticing

very important stuff is checking femoral pulses/listening to heart/looking in eyes/feeling testicles and hips

do you think at least that was done? if not go back!

Luvaduck - im sure that the GP did the important checks and like you say GP could of checked for things without me noticing i just thought from the way the midwife told me to book a 20 minute appointment that there would be a lot more. There is a community midwife at the mother & baby group that i go to tomorrow so will mention to her my concerns.

I think i will go back to get my stiches checked out just for my on piece of mind.

Thanks for all your replies as a first time mum i seem to be worrying about everything!!
