I’m feeling dreadful. My ferritin is 7 (heavy periods, treated now) but Hb is 130 which is well within guidelines so the dr won’t offer me an iron infusion. Since I had my bloods done a couple of weeks ago I’ve been poorly and feel even worse.

Symptoms include, white circles in my vision/floaters but not actually fainting, ringing in my ears, restless arms and legs, breathlessness, palpitations - all the usual suspects. Because I’ve been so sick and taking antibiotics my stomach can’t manage the iron at the minute.

Should I contact my dr again? I feel like the proverbial revolving door patient. Any advice gratefully received.

Hey there,
I had low iron for decades and took iron supplements for it. It took me a really long to realize that if I was taking the tablets and still had low iron, they were not working for me. Recently, I have learned that some people simply cannot absorb the kind of iron in the supplements, and about the difference between heme and non-heme iron.
Now, I focus on getting iron in my diet. This means eating beef liver, cooked in butter, twice a week. By itself with no side dishes, as other foods can impact the absorption of iron. And eating red meat most days.
It has worked for me, but it was a big change in terms of what I eat.

Best of luck, I hope you find a solution that works for you.
