Found a lump

Found a lump in breast on Weds. Contacted gp and have an appt on Monday. I’m not sure why they didn’t just refer me straight to breast clinic.

It doesn’t hurt. I’m 45 so am hoping it’s a hormone cyst thing. My mind is blocking out that it could be anything else but deep down of course I know it could be and I’m frightened.

Not great timing as DH is about to deploy over seas for 6 months in the next few weeks,
Waiting is hard, it’s making time go even slower!

There are lots of things it could be, that is why you need to see GP first.
handhold OP - it’s so tough waiting when you are scared, but it honestly could be a hundred things and is most likely hormone related.

Thank you, I know you’re right… need to engage logical brain. Time.is.dragging. Will go for a run.

I had a scare a couple of months ago and all was fine. I hope you're OK and try not to think the worst xx

They need to examine you and refer - the consultant referred to my gp's report of position of lump etc and their observations.

I've been twice to the breast clinic. Benign findings each time - consultant said 9/10 lumps benign but they are happy to see everyone. I had fibrocystic lumps - common in your 40s.

As you're over 40 you'll have a mammogram, examination and probably an ultrasound, possibly biopsy. It's a one stop shop so they'll be able to give you a good indication that day or just reassure you.

It is very stressful but you are doing the right thing getting it checked out and my clinic staff were lovely. Bring someone along with you if you can.

Iv had this twice the dr will give a full breast exam then do the referral which will be within 2 weeks then you will be told the results at the appointment. I know its easier said then done but try not to worry the majority of the time it's nothing. Both of mine where cysts. I had ultrasounds as I'm in my 20s i think its different over 40

ClioMuse · 22/03/2025 12:04

Sorry - I assumed the GP will refer you on. S/he probably will. Breast consultant said the GPs send anyone with a lump in to be checked out

Frequent flyer here. I’ve been I think 6 times in the last 10 years with lumps. Sometimes with several in each side. All have been cysts and drained there and then.
They will do everything, ultrasound, mammograms, biopsy if needed. They will be able to tell you on the day what it probably is.
The gp has to see you first to make the referral as they need to see and feel the lump to put position/shape/side/size on the referral and to ask you additional questions about when you found it and any other symptoms and family history.

Thank you all, this is so reassuring. It’s my first one so I’m new to navigating this. I’m also not telling any close family (only DH) as I don’t want to worry them and I don’t want to google! so this advice is super helpful. Thank you

Today is my breast clinic appt day. Luckily DH can come with me. Waiting has been hard but I’ve tried to just block it out of my mind as much as possible.

Good luck OP. Fingers crossed for you.

Flamingmentalcats · 01/04/2025 07:22

Wear something easy to take on and off as in my experience, you will be taking your top and bra off 3 times, initial exam, mammogram and ultrasound. That's what I have found anyway. If it's a cyst and they need to drain it, it doesn't hurt.
Good luck for today xx

SparklingMetre · 01/04/2025 11:47

Wow mammograms are pretty outrageous aren’t they! Just when I thought it was the max she turned the dial again! I feel sure if it was a cyst that would have popped it! Waiting for ultrasound…

Hoping you have been given the all clear.

SparklingMetre · 01/04/2025 15:21

All fine, benign cyst. Very relieved.
