Hello,

I have had for the last 9 days what the doctor has told me is paronychia? I was given a 7 day course of antibiotics (penicillin) which at the start seemed to bring the swelling down however it now has gotten worse.
I did an online consultation which another doctor who said he thinks it is the above but that antibiotics won't shift it.. and to come back if it doesn't go away itself.. the thing is it's been 9 days now and causing me significant pain, and I cannot do any exercise :( anyone else had this and what treatment did you have or did it go away on its own?
Have attached a photo..

I had one of those and it turned into an abscess. Antibiotics didn’t really help so I tried to draw it to a head with Magnesium Sulphate Paste which worked. Also soaking it in hot water and detol. It came to a head and I got drained by gp but you could do this yourself (but it had to come to a head before you squeeze it)

  • Go back to gp. Ai suggests Soak affected digit in warm water, several times daily.
  • Topical antiseptic may be prescribed for a localised, minor infection.
  • Oral antibiotics may be necessary for severe or prolonged bacterial infection; often a tetracycline, such as doxycycline, is prescribed.
