Hi. I have swelling between my thumb and index finger. It's much larger than my other hand. I've marked it on the image in blue. In red I'm getting pain over the joint. Any advice please?/What is it/how to make it go away? It doesn't ache but thumb joint is tender to touch. Many thanks!

@Legaleagleplease Can you elaborate please? I don't really feel your comment is helpful - it's actually quite worrying and I'm not sure if that was your intention or not.

@Katie342, that was posted to get a reaction from you. I've reported it.

@Footle Well that's a first! Thank you for spotting it. Shame this occurs when most on the community are so helpful and supportive.

Do you get gout? Any recent injuries/illnesses? If recent injury - minor injury unit if not GP or 111 for assessment.

@Katie342 , I'd say gout or 'pseudo gout' too. I'm not a medical person but have had something a bit like that, related to medication. I'm still here!

I get this and it's a tendinitis issue. Very very painful when it happens to me because I've pushed my hand(s) through more than it's been managing (I have fibro and other issues). You would be better checking with a GP.

Thanks all. I've iced it a bit and rested and is seems to have decreased a bit since yesterday. I'll keep an eye and go to GP next week if it's still inflamed. I don't like to bother the GP. Hopefully with some rest it will go down!

Apologies, I was only trying to have a bit of fun and not worry you. Many people have said similar to me and I have just laughed it off.

Hope you’re sorted out soon.

I have occasionally had similar pain and swelling. I think it has happened from straining the muscle. Eg pushing a buggy and carrying shopping or something like that. I don't recall ever seeing the doctor but it tended to settle.

ParkyRunner · 07/03/2025 13:33

Have a look at adductor pollucis pain. this is one of the muscles covering the webspace between thumb and index finger. Have you been doing an activity involving lots of thumb gripping that may have fatigued it? The red circle is quite a common place for arthritis, again this might be flared with lots of repeated gripping tasks. Trial of some ice, short term intermittent use of thumb splint and rest might help.
If that doesn’t work maybe speak to your Gp.

Hi there, any update on your swelling please. I have same for about 6 months now and it’s worrying

Katie342 · 08/06/2025 06:18

@jayja48Hello. So the swelling went down after about two weeks, but it’s only taken until now - just this last week actually - for the pain to relieve in the joint I circled in red. I took ibuprofen and reduced phone time, but I have only just recently balanced my HRT so I think it’s a combination of all of those things! Have you seen a GP? I did go and see my GP about jt.
