Does this look infected to you?

I had keyhole gallbladder removal surgery on Monday. This is my belly button incision. It feels itchy but I assumed this was down to the skin healing and the staples. I have gone to change my bandages and seen a little amount of leakage... does this look infected to you?

Looks a bit festy to me. Do you have any appointments coming up to have it checked? I'd keep a very close eye and if it gets any more oozy, the redness spreads or the soreness gets any worse I'd get it looked at over the weekend.

Elfie23 · 28/02/2025 22:25

Could you clean it with a salt water solution?
Does it smell or anything?
111 might be able to help?

TTCbaby2x · 28/02/2025 22:28

I've cleaned it out as it was only a tiny amount of leakage, no smell, no redness spreading, just yellow bruising. No pain, just aching from surgery. Only other symptom is itchiness. I'll keep a eye on it and get myself to the walk in over the weekend if It gets worse... as long as I shouldn't worry right now ill keep a eye on it

It doesn’t look too bad to me.

Toots22 · 28/02/2025 22:38

I would say that it looks as if there’s a little bit of pus there but it doesn’t necessarily look infected - can you cover with a dressing to keep in clean? I would keep a close eye on it though and if it gets red, swollen or hot, or you get pain or fever, go to doc.

No it doesn't. My laparoscopy wound wept and was bright red. Even then was just told to monitor and make sure that the redness didn't spread outwards, if it does that's a sign of infection. Mine got better on its own in a few days.

Belly button wounds do tend to ooze. As long as it’s not getting redder, hotter or sorer and you don’t feel unwell / start running a temperature I’d personally be ok with it, but if you are concerned you can usually
ring the ward you were on for advice?

MadamePeriwinkle · 28/02/2025 22:46

Might be granulation...and the inside is knitting together quicker than the external edge of the wound.

Just keep it clean and dry and it should be fine.

Pinkdreams · 28/02/2025 22:48

I'm medical, no not infected just needs regular clean

Greysquirrels · 28/02/2025 22:53
