Is this normal after chest infection?

I had a chest infection two weeks ago, I felt absolutely awful and I took 7 days of doxycycline. I feel much better now but my cough is still awful. Is this normal? It’s a chesty cough and not a dry cough, although I’m not always able to bring anything up. Should I go back to the doctor? It’s interrupting my sleep as I keep waking up and can’t stop coughing.

Did you have a chest x ray? I had pneumonia and had to have a follow up X-ray to check it had cleared. You can go back to the doctor and get them to listen to your breathing to see if your lungs are clear. A cough can last a long time though. Hope you feel better soon.

I know this sounds unbelievable but I never actually saw a gp. My surgery triaged me to a nurse practitioner and she prescribed the antibiotic over the phone. So I have no idea. I am feeling better in myself though just cannot stop coughing.

After Pneumonia i had a cough for 10 weeks
I had 3 lots of antibiotics and felt fine

I sounded awful, and people would stare at me if i was standing next to them, or actually move away from me

Go back to your doctor just to make sure its cleared
But having a cough for afew weeks after is common

I do sound awful, my manager has been questioning if I am ok to work even though I feel fine!

I think if you feel ok then your body's just taking a while to clear your lungs. Keep hydrated. I took an over the counter expectorant. One doctor said it might help, another said there wasn't much evidence for it but it wouldn't do any harm. I think it's soothing and might help you sleep better.

I agree lots of water to loosen.
Broncostop works well for me to clear out. And olbas oil on tissue overnight in the room to clear nose if that is post nasal dripping.

I didn’t ever have a cold so no post-nasal drip. I fall asleep fine but wake up in the night with a heavy chest and then the urge to cough. Once I start I can’t stop.
