Gastro (IBS?) flare up misery

TMI warning. I’ve tried not to go into too much graphic detail.

I’ve had IBS for all my adult life and still no wiser as to the triggers in all honesty. I’ve done FODMAP and I eat well, healthy weight. I dont drink alcohol very often, I don’t smoke. I try to be active.

IBS been settled for about a year. Bowel movement daily no problems.

I am in what seems to be a constipation phase for 8 weeks now. I didn’t take anything to start with, but the day of my holiday in Jan, I hadn’t had a BM for a week then I suddenly went spontaneously about 9 times in one day and I felt a lot better.

Then I couldn’t have a BM again for another week. At this point I took a bisocodyl (spasmodic laxative) which obviously took effect as expected and then I have tried to get back to normal but I can’t. I wasn’t in pain just not having any BM’s.

A week later still no BM, So then I tried movicol, taking 2 a day for a week which was starting to help but not much was happening, I was having small BM’s during the day, not very large amounts

then I thought maybe I need more fibre in my diet so I took one fybogel sachet yesterday instead of any movicol.

Since the fybogel I feel awful, so bloated and gassy, stomach hurts all the time and now I am going to the loo multiple times a day still very small amounts but it’s really smelly and loose.

I regret the fybogel and I won’t be taking that again. And I don’t think I should take any movicol until I feel better?

I don’t know how to get back on track from this episode. I will have to wait weeks for a GP appt anyway which is why I am trying to help myself before I go, I wasn’t hoping I could get on top of it before it turns chronic?

If you fancy an alternative approach take a look at Nick Norwitz on YouTube, he is a researcher who suffered from IBS and cured himself with dietary changes.
This is the title of one of his discussions,
Carnivore Diet for Inflammatory Bowel Disease: New Source of Hope? With Nick Norwitz, PhD.

Best of luck.

Sounds a bit too simplistic but have you tried eating 2 kiwi fruit per day?

I have IBS (but IBS-d for me) so I follow a lot of IBS specialists on SM. My sister also has IBS but suffers awful constipation as you have described, almost all of the IBS dietitians I follow suggest kiwi fruit for constipation so I mentioned it to her and she said it got things going, she now eats them daily. I mentioned it to DH too and he now has regular BM by eating a couple per day (he even eats the skins yuk!).

Kiwis are great, but the skin has a great additional benefit vitamin and fibre wise. Slice them, so the skin is less obvious, but wash and rub with a paper towel first. Have you considered that you have a Salicylate Intolerance. Lots of information on the web and I had no idea that you could have an intolerance until an allergy consultant told me that my aspirin allergy was linked. Worth considering.

I had an ultrasound today of my abdominal organs so waiting for the results.

I do not have constipation now I have the opposite issue of IBS-D. I’m so miserable. I’m scared to eat too much fruit and veg right now - I suspect I’ve had too much fibre?

It has calmed down a little bit since last night when it was awful, sulphur odour.

I’ve had gastro tests in the past and I think I will need to go back again for more to try to find out if there is a cause. I’ve had a camera, had all the bloods and no cause ever found. I stopped eating dairy for a year which helped but now it’s flared up for some reason. I am allergic to whey, that much I do know.

I will get some kiwis for when I feel less fragile!

I have got myself into a bad place with worrying and anxiety. I have a GP appt on Friday. Something is wrong, I just don’t know what and now start worrying about the worst
