Colonoscopy and Endoscopy

I have been having stomach problems for a few months leading to low ferritin levels so was referred to Gastroenterology who spoke to me yesterday by phone and they have recommended that I have both a colonoscopy and endoscopy. I was asked if I would have them both on the same day and I agreed.
Has anyone else had both done on the same day and which one did they do first. How did you feel and did you have sedation for them.
I would be grateful for any response.

Have had colonoscopys
take the sedataion!

I had both on the same day, with sedation. It was fine, just a bit woosy after. The Colonoscopy was first, followed by the gastro.

The worst part was the prep to 'clear' you out before hand. Just make sure you are at home!

They talk to you throughout and gave me results on the day, barring a few samples which they sent off, but for me could rule out cancer.

Good luck!

I'm now on various meds and it's life changing.

I had both on the same day. I had the sedation and it was fine. I was so dehydrated prior and was stressing they wouldn't be able to get a cannula in for the meds. The nurse was so lovely, she said if she or the immediate team couldn't do it there were literally hundreds of medics in the building and somebody would be able to stab me successfully 😂

Had the gastroscopy first. Sedation clearly worked because I asked such sensible questions such as "are you just going to go all the way through to the other end?!" Blush

Prep was worse than the procedure ime. Also feels a bit odd to be encouraged to audibly fart in front of people! Wasn't allowed to leave until that had happened.

Good luck Flowers

Thanks for the replies. I will be having the procedures within the next 2 weeks because I was referred on the 14 day pathway because of my age (I am 73)and my GP wants to be sure it’s not anything really worrying.

I’ve had both together. It’s not the most pleasant experience but not the worst either. As others have said the prep is the worst part. I had sedation and I can’t actually remember what they did first (!)

Had both on the same day. They did gastroscopy first then colonoscopy.

Take the sedation! First time I had them I pretty much slept most of the way through. Second time the sedative wasn’t quite as good but it still made it ok.

The prep is unpleasant but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting but I do suffer from IBS-D so am used to running to the loo!

I've had both on the same day also. As others said take the sedation. I've done flex sigs with gas and air and they can be uncomfortable enough.
In my case they did the gastroscopy first then the colonoscopy. All I remember was them bringing it towards my mouth then being wheeled out after. The prep for the colonoscopy isn't pleasant but if you chill it so it's ice coldit's more bare able. I was googling people experiences beforehand too but the thought of it all in your head makes it more than it is, you will honestly be fine. I'd have no issue having either procedure done again.

Sunflowerintherain · 19/02/2025 00:40

Im sure you will but definitely take the sedation!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 19/02/2025 01:26

I also had the gastroscopy first under sedation then the colonoscopy as the sedation was wearing off.
I’ve had a gastroscopy without sedation which I found unpleasant. I’ve also had a colonoscopy with gas and air which was fine.
I would always choose sedation for a gastroscopy if it was an option.
