UTI but not a UTI?

About 1.5 weeks ago I started feeling hot and cold and feeling pressure to pee.
A couple of days after these initial symptoms I woke up with dragging pain in my lower abdomen, aches and pains all over my body and urgent need to pee. Pee was dark in colour and/ or cloudy. No blood at any point through this whole thing.

Called online GP who diagnosed UTI and prescribed Nitrofurantoin x 3 days. Took for 2.5 days but symptoms did not ease, got worse. No pain on peeing, more like pressure.

Visited my own GP and they prescribed Keflex (Cefalexin) 500mg twice daily. Sent urine to lab. Took Keflex for 4 days, symptoms had eased hugely after 2 days, but early on morning 5 woke again with symptoms returned, pain had spread outward and upward + numbness on left side, front and back.

Visited an out of hours doctor early Sunday morning, urine dip test was clear, but increased my Keflex 500mg to 3 daily, started this on Sunday. Monday 5am awoke with back pain and numbness down my left arm, tingling in my fingers. Went to see my own GP again and they did urine dip test, again clear. Labs had come back, clear. They told me to complete my Keflex x 3 daily (which finishes Wednesday) and gave me a letter for A&E if this doesn't work as they are at a loss.

Temp normal, no gastro symptoms, no rash, feel unwell all of the time, hot and cold, achy, tired (but in fairness sleep is poor for over a week now).

This morning pain is slightly reduced and peeing urgency reduced, back pain is gone, but tingling and numbness has increased, especially in left arm. Abdomen feels swollen to me.

GP has given me a letter for A&E as says she can't do anything more. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Dd was misdiagnosed with a UTI when it was actually appendicitis?
ETA, her appendix was more central than is typical which is why they initially didn't suspect.

Could you be pregnant?
Appendicitis?
Ovarian cyst?

This doesn't sound like the case for you, but a friend endured years of being told she had a UTI, cameras inside the bladder, antibiotics all the time, till they said it was all in her head! It turned out she had endo on the OUTSIDE of her bladder!

Definitely not pregnant, I'm 55!
Some food for thought thanks. Still not feeling right, in pain etc. A visit to A&E may be on the cards.

There is a condition called interstital cystitis which gives UTI symptoms but not infection.

SPsmama · 20/02/2025 09:11

I have interstitial cystitis mentioned above, it's UTI symptoms with no active infection. Sometimes I get similar symptoms with thrush!

I see you're 55, sometimes these things are hormonal and it could be (peri)menopause that's causing it.

Ask your GP to refer you to urology, they may need to do a cystoscopy to diagnose any lesions or ulcers on your bladder which can cause IC.
