Eyelid eczema help!

DisneVillainsAreBetter · 15/02/2025 08:45

Someone with experience of this please help!
I get terrible dry, sore and swollen eyelids, I assume it’s eyelid eczema but it hasn’t been diagnosed as such.
lately it’s flaring up really badly and nothing has helped.
i have tried:

  • vaseline
  • balmonds skin salvation
  • Epimax ointment
  • my own breast milk
  • cold compresses
  • keeping the area washed and clean and make up free
I spoke to an associate in Holland and Barrett who said it could be my BF hormones or gut related (great, how do you even begin to connect flare ups to what you eat??) she recommend balmonds skin salvation which seemed to make it worse. All of the above have made it worse aside from Epimax Ointment which occasionally does help but other times doesn’t touch it.

any advice is greatly appreciated!

I get this and was prescribed something called 'Elidel' and I barely have to use any for it to clear up almost overnight. Absolute game changer.

Wheelz46 · 15/02/2025 09:42

I had horrendous eczema on my eyelids, wanted to scratch them off, I tried everything E45, Sudocrem, non of them worked.

Then I bought some coconut butter, absolute game changer, worked a treat and I now have smooth non itchy eyelids.

Do you use micellar water by any chance? Makes mine flare massively.

Not recommended but a tiny bit of hydrocortisone cortisone sorts it.

Miceeverywhere · 15/02/2025 10:17

Cleaning with blephasol twice a day massively improved my eczema/blepharitis (still don't know which, or if both).
When it was particularly bad I used hydrocortisone cream for five days, as advised by the GP. She said it would cause fewer problems than letting my eyes remain as they were.

voubledision · 15/02/2025 10:36

Lots of good ideas and I second the hydrocortisone prescribed by GP but also hemp products by body shop (they do hand cream and balms etc) was the only thing thr helped my sons excema.

starlight431 · 15/02/2025 10:51

I get this on one eyelid. I think it's the tears and maybe a blocked puncture. I'm waiting to see the gp to ask

Miscellar water you say hmmm! I don’t seem to be able to use a lot of make up removers but I thought this was ok I’ve had other before and they all seem to turn against me after a bit

Ilovelowry · 15/02/2025 11:07

Hydrocortisone. GP and consultant Derm told me to do this. Just a tiny bit and keep it away from your actual eyes.

Be aware you may flare for a day or two then it will go.

This will sound odd but j&j baby shampoo (the yellow stuff) works wonders!!

I was going to advise this …it really does work.

DisneVillainsAreBetter · 15/02/2025 19:06

Thank you for all your suggestions, I’ll probably be trying them all!

A friend of mine had this. She thought she had a dust mite allergy. Replaced all fabric sofas and chairs with leather ones. Turned out she was allergic to some chromium salt or other, used in the making of leather products, handbags, chairs etc. she was touching her bag strap, then touching her eyelids! And that was enough to do it. So have a think about what you are touching and maybe try antihistamines for a week. If it gets better, you could be looking for an allergen.

useres101848woyr · 15/02/2025 19:30

@DisneVillainsAreBetter It's probably blepheritis (prob spelt wrong cant be bothered to google)

What I'd recommend it

  • buy some antibiotic eye ointment from the chemist (over the counter) like Golden Eye sort of thing they give you for conjunctivitis but the ointment not the drops and apply it to your eyes as if for conjuncitivisit and smear it around over the eye lids. It looks all greasy so itn't attractive but it should clear up in a few days. apply as they tell you at least twice a day - monring and night before bed.
  • morning and evening first wash your face with a very gentle soap you get on with and luke warm warm - Dove is a good one.
  • then when your eyes are 'soap clean' finish off using Loreal gentle eye make up remover for cleaning your eyes very throughly morning and evening - use different cotton pads for each eye - so you aren't cross contaminating. LOreal make a different eye make up remover so do make sure it is this one - the gentle one.

https://www.loreal-paris.co.uk/micellar-water/gentle-eye-make-up-remover

  • dry your eyes again separately with a tissue for each eye - or cotton wool pad or whatever you use - but again a different one for each eye - do NOT use a towel on your face around your eyes as you cross contiminatae
  • change your pillow case every night.
  • no eye make up obviously and completely disinfect your eye make up brushes with Milton seterilising fluid and throw away any mascara you have used.
  • Blepheritis is a bit mysterious but if you treat it like this, as if you have an eye infection, it clears up.

You'll be fine in a few days. It's a bit of a hassle but it will get rid of it quickley

Earlier today I read it might be because I’m wearing impure gold or silver. I’m going to give it a try…

Okay wow, we use the Aldi version at home so i thought id try that first before buying J&J and it worked wonders for the itching and inflammation! Still caused my eyes to be a bit dry but a little of the Epimax ointment helped that part. The redness seems to be a permanent feature apparently 😔 but this certainly helped a great deal! Thank you!

My go to for flare ups is coconut oil and if that doesn’t help I’d try hydrocortisone.

That's what the GP told me to use. Worked within a couple of days.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 23/02/2025 09:04

I get this. E45 made it so much worse. The pharmacist recommended using nothing but simple aqueous cream, wiping it on with cotton wool a bit like cleanser. I was sceptical, but it cleared it up really quickly.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/02/2025 09:07

I used to have eczema on my eyelids, and patches on my hands, inside my elbows and intertrigo under my boobs.

I gave up wheat because of something else. It all cleared up within a fortnight.

FritataPatate · 23/02/2025 09:21

lollynip · 23/02/2025 09:43

I get this and realised it was happening when I was due a new glasses prescription. Dry eyes, leading to inflammation.

Have you had your eyes tested?

I’ve been using it for several days to deal with a stubborn reoccurring patch but after not using for three days it has flared up overnight? Did you mean it will flare after stopping or during using?

Ilovelowry · 29/01/2026 11:13

Mine flares when I put the cream on.
But excema always comes back. Ive had it for 48yrs, it's like whack a mole. I don't really bother with it unless it gets sore in the winter, or my hands bleed.

StrawberryJamAndRaspberryPie · 29/01/2026 12:02

Get a steroid ointment from the GP fgs. It’ll be gone in 3 days. Why would you consult a Holland and Barrett shop assistant about a medical condition… she has 0 medical or health training and is a salesman.

I went to GP last week for exact same problem.
He said use E45 but I bought La Roche Posay Cicaplast B5 and have been using that morning and night, it’s helped massively.

Yep! The Roche Posay is the only thing that helps mine too (and doesn't sting)
