Eyelid eczema help!

DisneVillainsAreBetter · 15/02/2025 08:45

Someone with experience of this please help!
I get terrible dry, sore and swollen eyelids, I assume it’s eyelid eczema but it hasn’t been diagnosed as such.
lately it’s flaring up really badly and nothing has helped.
i have tried:

  • vaseline
  • balmonds skin salvation
  • Epimax ointment
  • my own breast milk
  • cold compresses
  • keeping the area washed and clean and make up free
I spoke to an associate in Holland and Barrett who said it could be my BF hormones or gut related (great, how do you even begin to connect flare ups to what you eat??) she recommend balmonds skin salvation which seemed to make it worse. All of the above have made it worse aside from Epimax Ointment which occasionally does help but other times doesn’t touch it.

any advice is greatly appreciated!

Try organic castor oil.

Loveduppenguin · 15/02/2025 08:48

This will sound odd but j&j baby shampoo (the yellow stuff) works wonders!!

Haha yes it does sound strange but willing to try anything at this point!

Dermol helped mine and cetraben. Mine is due to certain products irritating them I think but maybe hormones as it’s worse (peri hormones)

Isn't that recommended for blepharitis rather than eczema?

Strange question but do you have gel nails? I had this and finally realised it's because I was allergic to my gel nails and it was making my eyelids flare up!

Cotswoldmama · 15/02/2025 09:07

My son gets prescribed Protopic ointment for his eczema on his face. I have heard that urea is good for eyelid eczema when I went down an online eczema research rabbit hole! I've been using it after I apply Tretinoin in the evenings as it helps with my dry skin and I've had no sensitivity. I'm using an inkey list 10%urea one and it's in home bargain for about £3.50 at the moment so a bargain! Or online uk.theinkeylist.com/products/dry-and-rough-skin-solution

This is really good

See the GP. My DD has this and was prescribed a non-steroid cream which cleared it up in 7 days. Before that she looked like a red-eyed panda.

I have no official diagnosis for whatever this is

I don’t. I did stop using hairspray though thinking this was making it worse by inevitably getting some of it on my skin

Yeah it worth a try as sometimes blepharitis can occur alongside eczema.

Plantymcplantface · 15/02/2025 09:15

I get this. Emovate cream is the only thing that clears it. also stay away from anything else product wise - I only use cleanse and polish and Aldi moisturizer. Eyeshadow especially anything with shimmer or glitter is a no go.

IJustLoveDogsTBH · 15/02/2025 09:15

I went to GP last week for exact same problem.
He said use E45 but I bought La Roche Posay Cicaplast B5 and have been using that morning and night, it’s helped massively.

helplesshopeless · 15/02/2025 09:19

I get this seasonally (flares up in winter) - when it gets really bad I use fucidin cream which was prescribed by the dr for it. It's got steroid and antibiotics in it I think, so I use very sparingly, but it honestly sorts it out without a day or two then I just keep on top of it with E45.

This is kind of why I haven’t seen a GP yet, I don’t want a lazy response like ‘use e45’ when I could just try that myself

I also get this especially in winter, just coming to the end of a 5 day flare up where Ive wanted to claw my eyes out from the itch.

I have epimax emollient but have to put it on at the slightest sign of a tingle but when it's in full flare up I need to go makeup free 😔 and have hydrocortisone cream from the GP and I also slather me eyelids in coconut oil overnight as the hydrocortisone is very drying. Also I take an antihistamine which really helps.

How much does the coconut oil help? I have some at home already so I could try that first

It just seems to sooth and moisturise it. No idea of the science behind it though!

Pinkl · 15/02/2025 09:32

My go to for flare ups is coconut oil and if that doesn’t help I’d try hydrocortisone.

thefemaleJoshLyman · 15/02/2025 09:36

So I had a horrendous flare up earlier on this winter. My eyes were horrific. In the end the GP prescribed steroid cream (hydrocortisone) and a small course (3days) of oral steroids. This stopped the worst of it.

Since then, I've tried to find triggers...might be dairy, might be my own tears (not that I cry much) but it was a tough time when it started.

I have switched to aveeno skin care and am not using eye liner or mascara. It is more or less under control. I recommend the aveeno stuff.

Interestingly I had also had massive issues with my lips and have had to stop using Vaseline as it was making them worse.

You have my massive sympathy, facial eczema is no fun.
