Sudden breast pain one side

I’m 45, perimenopausal. I always have breast pain before my period. I have large breasts and in the week leading up to my period, they throb, feel firmer, so sensitive especially taking my bra off at night. However I took my bra off on Sunday night and felt this horrible pain in my right breast. It’s kind of outer boob, middle to lower and going towards the nipple. If I lean forward it feels so heavy and so full of pressure like it wants to explode. Same when I tense the muscle - it just feels so firm and like it wants to burst out of the skin. I think today there’s some heat in it too. Any ideas? I have dense breasts and they tend to be quite bumpy but can’t notice any lumps. I have an appointment with the gp for a coil check on the 27th so if it’s still bothering me I’ll ask about it then. I’ve read it could be a peri meno symptom. I’ve also read that pain is rarely cancer but at the same time seen posts on here where posters disagree with that. I have health anxiety largely controlled with antidepressants but I find something like this more than a bit unnerving.

I've had similar recently.
Contact your GP and they should refer you to your local.breast clinic for a check up.

Mine was in 4 days and they were lovely.

@ChimpyChops what did it turn out to be? I probably won’t get an appointment before the one I have booked on the 27th.

Popping in to share experiences and also hand hold a bit. I'm also experiencing breast pain and suffering from anxiety, a truly winning combo.

A few months back I suddenly experienced a really tender spot on my left boob. It hurt if I brushed against it, it really hurt if I pressed down on one spot and I was getting burning pain across the boob if I moved it too much. I went to the breast clinic and had an ultrasound which found nothing, and after about 2 weeks the pain went away.

Unfortunately I'm now suffering from different pain in the same boob; I'm getting random stabbing and shooting pains all over the top and side which have been happening for about a month now. I'm off to the breast clinic again on Thursday 😩 it's quite draining to be honest, and having tried to manage my worry for the last month I would say don't leave it until the 27th if you're still stressing about it in a week. Better to talk to the doctor about it than sit there worried like I've been, it's really gotten on top of me this week and I wish I'd just gone to get it checked out sooner.

@Rosecat22 thank you for your response. I’ve always been. Worst case scenario sort of person but have learnt to tell myself that the chances of it being worst case scenario are low. But then the thoughts that creep into my mind are “what if” and I know it’s an endless cycle of worry. It’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one though.

I had this for years - still do occasionally. I never bothered about it, as I figured it was simply age-related. Now I'm even older, I presume that's why it doesn't happen so often. Just forget about it.

HealthAnxietyReallySucks · 11/02/2025 15:04

@Cynic17 just in one boob? It came on so suddenly is what makes me feel it’s just one of those age related things. I want to give it time to settle down so need to stop prodding and poking myself. And if it is still painful on the 27th I will mention to my gp who is just lovely.
