How long to get biopsy results

Linzie79 · 06/02/2025 15:02

Hi, I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy on the NHS in the first week of November and biopsies were taken. The discharge letter stated that results would be available within 6 to 8 weeks. It's now week 13 and I haven't heard anything. Is this delay typical? I understand it might be region-dependant (I'm in South-East England). I've called and emailed and no one picks up/replies to emails. Is anyone else experiencing similar delays?

No this seems like an unusually long delay in hearing results. Who is it that you have been emailing? It is worth contacting your GP surgery to see if they can chase it for you or access the system to see if the results are on there (this will be area dependant based on which software is used). Hope you get some answers soon!

Thanks for your feedback. I've called the number on the consultant's letter and emailed the dept, but no response. My GP hasn't heard anything. Via the patient app I think I can see biopsy results for the colonoscopy, but not the endoscopy. Maybe those are just taking longer as erosive gastritis was detected during examination. Just 13 weeks seems excessive now!

That is an excessive wait..

I say that as someone whos had 3 colonoscopies recently.
And lotsa biopsies

My best advice would be to complain / Email
directly to the pALS
At the hospital

By emailing to complain to PAlS
At the hosp - they will actively chase it and get you results

Generally should be 4 - 6 weeks for results
At a,push ok maybe 8

But definitely no more

Do be persistent.

Pals will help you sort it
