Sudden Heavy bleeding between periods

My period finished a week ago. Today I’ve woken up with bright red bleeding and clots. Normally my flow is quite light so I am really alarmed at how heavy it is. I am only 32 and I have the contraceptive implant but have had it for a year at least with normal periods throughout that time.

What do I do? I don’t know whether to call my GP or if I’m overreacting and need to wait to see if it settles?

I would call the doctors now, explain to the receptionist and take it from there.
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about but any unusual (to you and your norm) bleeding should be looked into.

Thank you - I called the GP they have no same day appointments I need to try and call at 8:30 tomorrow morning. Or I could go to A&E but to be honest I don’t think it warrants that.

A&e won't do much, unless the bleeding is really heavy. Ask the Dr if it's possible it could be a fibroid causing the bleeding? They can check for those with an ultrasound scan. When was your last smear test?

BroadBeanie · 05/02/2025 13:18

Smear Test was probably about 3 years ago but I did see a Gynaecologist for an unrelated issue about 12 months ago and he had a good look at everything and I had an internal scan etc. He said everything looked fine then. So I’m hoping he would have seen anything sinister if it was brewing then.

Make sure you call back at 8.30am and don't let them fob you off. As I said, likely to be nothing but best to get it checked and not ignore it.

Not necessarily. My friend had a clear smear test and then months later had cervical cancer.

It’s probably hormonal breakthrough bleeding with the implant. I bleed constantly on mine.

@BroadBeanie - did you get an answer to this? I'm currently experiencing similar
