Does DVT pain move?

I think i am being a bit dramatic suspecting DVT. I have no symptoms other than pain.

Basically about two weeks ago my little toe grew very swollen, red and painful. This is not unusual for me because i have other swollen toes due to (we think) arthritis. I visited the GP anyway, had bloods done and last week went for an x ray.

A few days ago a pain started in my knee. I couldn’t kneel on it. I have long term pain in my other knee so wasn’t surprised. The toe whilst still painful isn’t quite as bad as it was but i lay in bed two nights ago and cried with the shooting pains travelling down my knee to my foot.

Thats all fine but today the knee pain has moved upwards in my thigh. It is now mid thigh, at the front centre. There is no redness or heat and the leg isn’t swollen but i can’t shake the feeling that sprains/strains/arthritis doesn’t usually travel?! My knee is ok again! Does DVT pain move?

I will see the doctor if i have to but i really don’t want to go for multiple visits and have them suspect me as a fantasist right when i’m trying to campaign for a referral to a specialist for arthritis. I’m 39 and very overweight but no other risk factors for DVT.

I’d say it sounds more like nerve pain and sciatica

Call 111 and let them decide. Blood clots do travel although I'm not suggesting you do have one. Call them.

I'd be more inclined to suspect gout than DVT. Dad's pain definitely moves.

endofthelinefinally · 05/02/2025 09:16

I would be thinking of gout too.

getahhtmapub · 05/02/2025 09:35

Sounds like gout.
I've had DVT and the pain didn't move. Never heard of a DVT that started in a toe either. Gout pain is hot and red and attacks the joints.

Thanks everyone! I’ve had blood tests for gout that came back normal. ESR was raised but only slightly. I’ll just wait and see what happens if i’m not in imminent danger of dying 😬😅
