This may be better under an employment bit but what the hell.....

DD (12) has decided she wants to be a radiologist. she had her arm x-rayed last week and was totally fascinated by it all.
i'm pleased because until now she has only wanted to be either a ballerina or an oscar winning actress - (neither of which are likely to happen.
So - she's just asked me what qualifications she'd need and i'm too lazy to google it and find out as this is MN time.
and most importantly what are the job prospects/pay like? if that's not too nosey?

A radiologist will be a doctor who trains and specializes in the field. That would be 3-4 A * grades at A level in the sciences plus experience.

You can also train as a radiographer, this can be diagnostic (doing the X rays and scans etc) or therapeutic, treating people with cancers. Both tend to need a degree. My niece did this. You still need very good grades at A level

just told her that - she pulled a face. I told her not to be daft and to go for it. will start cracking the academic whip.

You can do radiology at uni as an undergrad course, you don't need to be medicine.

Does she mean a radiographer (someone who takes the x-rays) a radiologist is the docter who then looks at them and interprets them.

To train to be a radiogorapher is just a degree course...is fairly well paid on the NHS and VERY well paid if you work through an agency.

My ex-boyfriend was a radiographer and had been know to be earning around £25 per hour when he worked for an agency.

blimey - she's just announced she wants to be the radiologist who can diagnose from the images - therefore a doctor.
she'll be able to keep me in my old age.

Royal College of Radiologists website may be helpful. Tell herto go for it- it is one of the more family friendly medical specialties. We do lots of the fun stuff (ie cracking the diagnosis) Lots of exams and on call until you are in your early 30s though.

Send her round to me.... I'll soon talk her out of being a doctor!
