Oramorph, has anyone taken it?

I was prescribed this today and I’ve never had it before. I take co-codamol on occasion for pain, the prescribed ones. But the pain is just awful at the moment. While I was at my weekly nurse appointment she could see I wasn’t my usual self and asked what pain relief I’m on. She said it’s clearly not enough and got the GP to do me some Oramorph.

I am going to take some at bedtime just a bit wary of it.

You'll be fine, it won't knock you sideways but hopefully help with your pain. Take a half dose of you're really worried. Hope it works.

shockeditellyou · 31/01/2025 22:23

Had it after a C section, wonderful stuff. Only needed a dose or two and then I was back on paracetamol. No ill effects whatsoever.

NikkiAlexander · 31/01/2025 22:23

I have it PRN and have had for around 5 years for breakthrough pain. I also have morphine slow release. It doesn't effect me apart from helping with pain but I take strong anti sickness anyway. Some people it makes sleepy and others with nausea - can you take a half dose of 2.5 ml to see how you go.

Glitchymn1 · 31/01/2025 22:24

Yes. After a c sec. I didn’t get in with it, room was swimming, nausea, vomit, very wobbly and didn’t reduce pain. At home, might be different.
My advice would be try it, but keep a sick bowl, kitchen roll, bag and water close.

What is your pain op?

Balloonhearts · 31/01/2025 22:25

Best case, it'll stop the pain, worst case it'll at least stop you caring. Just don't plan on driving until you know if it makes you spacey.

Yourinmyspot · 31/01/2025 22:25

Thank you, it does say on the label take 2.5 or 5ml so will take the 2.5 can always have a bit more if I’m okay. I’m only 4ft 11 and 7 stone so think half a dose will be enough.

Yes my daughter has a football match tomorrow but I’ve arranged a lift for her in case I’m not fit to drive.

I was given it in a&e when I went in with a gall bladder attack, they didn't tell me what it was just said are you allergic to anything, then handed me a syringe to squirt into my mouth and put me in the waiting room, I felt really woozy and detached from reality, having said that I once took 2 naproxen as prescribed for a back injury and a colleague drove me home because he said my pupils looked ridiculous, and I felt light headed so I think I might be sensitive to painkillers!

It’s my skin, I have this rare condition where I get blisters which then burst and my palms are just raw flesh at the moment as well as my wrists and about half my arms and chest. Had a horrible flare up.

It’s great stuff hopefully you’ll have a really good sleep

thecatneuterer · 31/01/2025 22:34

It tastes unbelievably disgusting. Works well though. I didn't feel too out of it, but it did make me feel sick when I stood up.

Negangirlxx · 31/01/2025 22:34

I had some after my c section, and it really helped with the pain. I don’t think I noticed any side effects, but I had lost a fair bit of blood, and had low BP, so that could have made me woozy, rather than the morphine. I did also itch quite a lot, but not sure if that was the morphine, or the spinal block that caused it.

Oh yeah it is rank.
You get used to it though.

MelisandeLongfield · 31/01/2025 22:34

Post hysterectomy - it did me no harm but it was nowhere near as effective as intravenous morphine.

lilytuckerpritchet · 31/01/2025 22:36

If it makes u nauseated request anti sickness tablets

Rachie1973 · 31/01/2025 22:36

My DH uses it for breakthrough pain. Works best in conjunction with regular pain relief.

Oppenovverandout · 31/01/2025 22:39

Yes I had it prescribed after gynae surgery. I had to take a laxative with it, otherwise no problem.

Fedupandstressed · 31/01/2025 22:41

I had it when I was on chemo as the pain in my bones was pretty bad. Made me feel sick though so got naproxen instead.

StormingNorman · 31/01/2025 22:43

I used it for a couple of weeks for muscular neck & back issues…along with diazepam!

I didn’t have any side effects like feeling out of it or nausea. It was bloody brilliant for the pain though.

JustPickleRick · 31/01/2025 22:45

I was given oramorph when I had painful kidney stone colic. I was taken to A&E and given this whilst in the ambulance but it didn't really touch the pain. The only effective relief was from a diclofenac suppository 😅 maybe see if you can try those next if the oramorph doesn't do anything!

Cupcakerat · 31/01/2025 22:50

After an op and it was lovely!

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 31/01/2025 23:04

It didn't do anything for my pain and gives me nightmares/vivid dreams and constipation.

unsync · 31/01/2025 23:17

Not everyone can metabolise it, but hopefully you can and will get some relief. It can make you constipated though, so extra fluids and fibre can be helpful.

Yourinmyspot · 31/01/2025 23:24

Thanks for the advice, I’m going to take it now and go to bed. Annoyingly I’m allergic to ibuprofen and diclofenac so can’t have any of that family of drugs.

It gave me terrible night terrors. Really, really bad……
