Hi!
I've self diagnosed as having the above. How do I relieve it?! Laxatives?
I was taking Imodium up to Tuesday night when I realised this was a different problem.

My DH is bed bound with flu and I have two small people to look after so the least problematic solution would be appreciated! Ie no ducolax!!!

If you mean impaction with overflow you need movicol and a proper disimpaction regimen.
Phone the ERIC helpline and download the Bristol stool chart.
Google the poo nurses video and watch it all the way to the end. It is very informative and easy to follow.

Thank you @endofthelinefinally

I googled the helpline and that looks like it is for children?

The information is equally good for adults - the treatment is the same. the helpline used to offer advice and support for adults too, but perhaps that has changed in recent years.
There might be a separate service for adults.

TBH it doesn't matter, it's the same concept!

Basically you get so constipated that there is a solid bung. The only way anything can get past is by turning to a liquid. Taking Immodium just makes it even worse.

You want Movicol/Laxido - same drug, different brands. Bear in mind a sachet takes 2-3 days to work and you will probably need more than 1 sachet a day. So it can be easier to do a disimpaction regime and see what your bowels need day to day.

I can try get an appointment on Monday. Could I take some lactulose or would you say best to wait?

How has it occurred? Well I've been taking an iron supplement and am prone to constipation anyway!
