No tonsils but agonising throat and white areas?

Naively when I had my tonsils removed 15 years ago I thought I was exempt from any further problems! And to be honest until now, everything has been fine.

I’m on illness number 5 since October (Norovirus, chest infection, flu &covid). I started with fever like symptoms yesterday, sweating profusely, sky high temp and muscle aches. Same again tonight but I am struggling so much to swallow. It’s agony! And taking me back to the agonising days of tonsillitis. The back of my throat looks red, veiny and where my tonsils use to be is full of a white layer.

Any tips/ideas?

Get thee to a walk in centre /urgent care in the morning. Sounds very much like it could be strep throat/quinsy and will potentially need antibiotics to treat. In the meantime, if you have calpol/kids ibuprofen, you can gargle with that and give yourself an adult dose if you read how many mg of medicine per ml they contain. It's usually 20ml of each you need if you have the 6+ stuff. Much easier to swallow than tablets and provides a bit of local relief too

A spoonful of pure honey can be quite soothing too, especially if you try to hold it in the part of your throat is painful

You need medical advice from your GP to see if it's an infection, but for now gargling with salty warm water may help (or dilute TCP if you have any).
