Hi,

last night I started to have a panic attack before bed so I took one 25mg pill of promethazine (Phenergan). Usually you get them on prescription only but this dodgy pharmacy gave me a box for £13.99. Anyways, I took one last night went to bed.
i went into such a deep sleep and couldn’t open my eyes or be roused- I slept in til 4pm. When I woke up I couldn’t really breathe I was short of breath & felt high as a kite. I felt giddy and slow, I was staggering around like I was drunk & slurring my words. I’ve had this medicine before and felt tired the next day but nothing like this. I’m still knackered and falling asleep next day and it’s 5:37 pm. I don’t know if it’s relevant but I drank some alcohol Friday night (2 days ago I think)
is this normal? Will I be fine?
if it’s relevant I can usually handle pills quite well and dosage , I’m quite overweight
thanks xx

You can buy phenergan over the counter in pharmacies at that strength so I doubt they were dodgy. Although the effect doesn’t usually last for that long.

You can buy phenergan at a pharmacy. It's an old style anti histamine not used so much now because of it's sedative effect. It's also helpful for mild anxiety.
Some people take them as sleeping pills. I've had it before and like you it knocks me out and the sedative effect continues next day

That happened to me once with a beta blocker. I also was struggling with insomnia because I was really wired. The doctor gave me a box of betablockers. I took one and slept solidly for 24 hours and felt much much better the next day. I never needed to take any more and gave the box back to the pharmacist.

Maybe once your antihistamine wears off you will be brand new?

I take them if I'm back to back nights or have had 3 plus days of insomnia to get out of the loop. I get a good sleep plus I am very groggy the next morning. I only take them if ive got someone around for the kids though Ive never experienced being completely unrousable and certainly never got more than 10 hours sleep. This reaction sounds a bit unusual for me.

Next day tiredness isn't an unusual side effect, but the rest of it is, especially as you didn't react like that when having it before. Any chance you're also sick? I'm sure you'll be fine, it's not a risky medication unless given to a young child, hence being able to get it over the counter. Unless you got completely smashed on Friday all the alcohol should be out of your system by now anyway so it shouldn't be because of that. It might be worth calling 111 for advice and just in case it is an allergic type reaction I would be careful if taking it in future. If you get bad next day sedation you might be better off using the 10mg version next time.
