(((noddy))) poor you.

No wise advice, really, but you've been heard and understood

Plenty of pillows, sips of cool water, and if I were you I'd take the cough suppressant tonight anyway: drowsy when you're asleep is ok, isn't it? Maybe not during the day, but for the night?

I find dd's Benelyn Childrens Night Coughs (or Medised) works for me - don't bother with the grown up ones. They do make you sleepy but not hungover, IYSWIM.

Hope you're better soon, xx

steam inhalation. best thing for any cough.

JenniferHart · 04/05/2008 22:11

Is it asthma? When my mum and my dd have asthma, they both get terrible coughing fits.

Have you ever tried an inhaler to relieve the coughing?

Elibean · 04/05/2008 22:11

true, it does help dd2 (who has a semi-permanent night cough that doesn't respond to inhalers )

singyswife · 04/05/2008 22:13

Steam Inhalation is excellent, wet flannel/bowl of water on the radiator. Suck on boiled sweets. Honey and Lemon may help to coat the throat and stop it for a while. Several pillows may also work. Alternatively, take piriton to stop the tickle and reduces irritation, painkillers for the pain and then cough syrup, if nothing else you WILL sleep. I have seen me doing this in the past. Hope you feel better tomorrow.

Wouldn't the drowsy stuff be good for nightime?
Other than that I feel your pain have had a constant cough since ds was born,GP no help (have 3 inhalers but apparently no I don't have asthma ). I can usually cope with the coughs (raise self high, steam/menthol) but one night I just could not breathe, it was awful.

If you feel really bad and the cough is preventing you from sleeping I would ring the out of hours doctors especially as you have the cough but not the infection. It's so bloody annoying, I've had loads of amoxycillin which does feckery all.

For me I do these things when a cough is threatening:

nibble apple.
drink water, milk, not sweet drinks, tea or coffee.
eat easy, moist food, frequently.
avoid sweet things.

My theory is that the bugs in my throat need peace and quiet and sugar to live and multiply. If I move them on frequently by eating and drinking there are fewer of them. I stop providing them with sugar to live on, so overall the numbers dwindle and I feel better!

I used to get prolonged coughs with a cold, but now I simply don't suffer any more.

Good luck

I got a humidifier when I was struck down with a terrible cough a few years ago. It runs all night long and you can have it beside your bed.

Turn the water heater on before going to bed so you know you can make the bathroom all steamy in the middle of the night. I slept/dozed on a beanbag in there once.

Don't talk during the day. That used to set me off. How you avoid it with children I don't know.

noddy I have a perpetual cough after giving up smoking. doc prescribed an inhaler to suppress the cough (don't know what was in it but think it was an asthma med) for a month and have had no problems since. worth a trip to the docs I reckon
