Oh my God. I am freaking out. On wednesday I came up in lots of really itchy red bumps around my neck and on my chest. I had been in the park so I thought it was insect bites. Those ones don't seem to be too itchy any more but I think new bumps are appearing and they are itchy too. I did some research on the internet and have got myself into a state thinking that I might have scabies. The thing is, I can't think where I could have contracted it from. My 11 month old DS has been to some playgroups but if I got it from him then surely he would have symptoms too? He doesn't seem to have any so far. I am really, really worried about this. Does anyone have any experience of scabies or any advice? I am in Australia and it is 9.30pm here so I can't go to the doctor. I feel sick just thinking about this.

sounds more like hives , possibly an allergic reaction ?

paranoidmuch · 04/05/2008 12:39

Really? Why do you think that? I can't think of anything I might have reacted to. My DH is also itchy but he doesn't know if its psychosomatic!

Definitely sounds like hives to me, could be an allergic reaction to a plant, or if it's spread over your body more likely to be a food reaction. Have you used any new deodorant, perfume, washing powder etc?

Would take an antihistamine, plus if you have any bicarb of soda then mix it into a paste with a little water and apply, it is very soothing.

I haven't changed anything or used any new products. I haven't eaten anything different either. It seems to be in litle paches - mainly on my chest but there are a few on my wrist, a little patch on my side and one or two on the top of my leg.

I had an outbreak of hives a couple of months ago, I hadn't eaten anything different either but the doc said it was definitely a food reaction. I think it was down to a dodgy bottle of wine as that was the only thing I'd had that DH hadn't.

I've had scabies (work hazzard!) What you have described is not scabies I promise

Have you any itching along with little clear or maybe white blisters/spots between fingers or toes?

paranoidmuch · 04/05/2008 12:49

No, I haven't had any between fingers or toes. Is this what makes you think it isn't scabies?

We have had scabies, ds2 kindly brought it home from uni on one of his visits to see his loving family [ask for funds] it caused such bad itching between fingers that I could understand the rumour the a itch really can drive you insane, good news was that one treatment will cure it, we had no symptons like yours so I doubt you have scabies,

GluteusMaxiMum · 04/05/2008 12:56

Yeah - I've had it twice (very embarrassing but as I say work related and not something that could be avoided)

Both times it started between my fingers, the palms of my hands and between my toes before I had an itch anywhere else. The doc diagnosed on these symptoms alone and said they were 'classic'. I had to paint (yes paint with a paintbrush)my entire body with a revolting concoction (sp?) called Quallada or something like that. None of the spots were very big like hives, just small, clear, hard lumps under my skin.

Have you read otherwise on the net?

paranoidmuch · 04/05/2008 13:01

Oh wow - I might actually be able to sleep now! I got myself into a bit of a state. No, I don't have itchy fingers or palms and the bumps I have are like little flea bites or something. Yes, I read on the internet that this is how scabies is at the start. I was getting all paranoid that I was going to have to burn all my sheets and paint my baby with medicine! I am not usually a hypochondriac, I promise! Thank you for your help.
