Moving onto paroxetine

I have been on citlopram 40mg for around 6 years and feel it's no longer working for me as it once did. My doctor is putting me on paroxetine. Is anyone else on these and had any bad side effects please

I didn’t think this was being prescribed any more apart from to people who have been on it for a very long time. It’s an SSRI so a lot like the Citalopram that you already take. However, paroxetine is notoriously difficult to stop taking - harder than other SSRIs and is known for having harsher side effects - they’ll be the same side effects that you’re used to but may be ramped up a bit. I was put on it over 20 years ago and it dug me out of a hole, but then dropped me back in it when my dose was increased which made me self harm and feel suicidal. I’d never self harmed before and never have since - it was definitely the paroxetine. Basically, be very careful. It may work really well for you but beware dose increased, see your GP ASAP if you feel suicidal or like hurting yourself, and be aware that coming off it can be a rough ride and you have to do it very slowly (to be fair, you have to taper down very slowly to withdraw from any SSRI).

Hi

i took Paroxetine for quite a while. The only side effect I had was a”whoosh” going through my head if I forgot to take it. Other than that I was fine and it worked.

I found Citalopram not worth the side effects to benefit ratio; Venlafaxine was dire - I had severe joint pain with that.

I am on Paroxetine 20mg and I am fine with it like the previous poster I do get a funny Whoosh feeling if I forget to take it, been on it for quite a while and it helps me, hope all works out ok for you

I am on Paroxetine 20mg too. I have no side effects but the same whooshing if I forget to take it and brain zaps if I forget to take it more than once. Also it calms my night terrors but these are awful if I forget to take it.I was prescribed it for PTSD and have been taking it three plus years now and it’s still very effective. I am going to try to come off it in 2026 but know it will be a very difficult and drawn out process.

Thanks for the comments and I'll take notice of the side effects but so far no problems I'm only on 20mg tho so will watch it if I go up another dosage
