Have you stopped smoking recently?
Do you feel you need to stop but havent quite got there yet?
Need a little push, or a great big SHOVE or just somewhere to write down how you are feeling?
Heres the place...

I really must stop......am going to try again in the summer. I have heard of a new drug that you can get prescribed so am going to make an appt at the docs soon.....

charliecat · 04/05/2008 10:35

Soon, how about by the end of next week?

OP posts:
Lushaddict · 04/05/2008 12:42

Been quit 10 weeks but slipped a disc in my back over the weekend and ended up in hospital yesterday.
The pain drove me back to fags again yesterday when I came out

southeastastra · 04/05/2008 12:54

oh no lush.

i have one year left of my thirties. i have to crack it this year.

MrsMattie · 04/05/2008 12:58

30 is a really good age to give up@southeastra. It's your 30s where the balance starts to tip from 'young, carefree, having a fag with my wine' to 'old hag with smoking wrinkles' . I gave up completely last year (was a 'with wine' smoker for about 2 yrs before that, had given up when pregnant, pre-preg was a 20 a dayer for 14 yrs). It was tough, but has got so much easier.

Good luck everyone

charliecat · 04/05/2008 15:27

Ok. Well I must direct you all to whyquit.com.
Read it till you know it in out, back to front etc, I know at least one other Mnetter has cracked it via whyquit.
It changes the way you think about fags and smoking until you have no choice but to stop smoking, you cant justify it anymore.
Lush! Get back on the wagon...did the fag help the pain at all? Bet it just SHATtered your confidence in yourself.
Also a copy of Allen Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking wouldnt be a bad thing, cheap on ebay
SEA did i read you were saving your tesco vouchers to go to an AC clinic?

I'm stopping again in the morning, feel so mad with myself but found the back pain hard to cope with so gave in to the bloody ciggies.

Janni · 04/05/2008 18:04

Good luck - not a smoker but really remember my dad struggling to quit when I was a child and how we would all be on tenterhooks!

Remotew · 04/05/2008 18:14

I've made a pact with someone at work to quit on the 7th which as DD just pointed out is Wednesday. I'm going to give it another go. Had lots of attempts.

charliecat · 04/05/2008 21:46

One of these trys will be it. You learn something new every time and if, like me you fail so many times, you actually run out of excuses!

CoteDAzur · 05/05/2008 09:30

I quit at the beginning of the year.

Why Quit was great. It really drove the message home that smoking is stupid, that I kid myself about it, that it will kill me, etc.

Stop Smoking Center was also very good. It has a very supportive message board. Read through their 'program' before you quit. And start your 'mileage'. Mine is:

My Mileage
Smoke-Free Days: 126
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,262
Amount Saved: ?327.60
Life Gained:
Days: 10 Hrs: 17 Mins: 41 Seconds: 5

I would have smoked 1,262 cigarettes since 1 Jan if I hadn't quit! And I smoked only half a pack a day.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 09:49

not sure about why quit, it seems to be anti patches,

smoking cessation advice pretty good, for my dh anyway.
and for me for 2 months.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 09:49

and i think most smokers have read Alan Carr, but obviously not worked here!

charliecat · 05/05/2008 09:55

The reason why quit is anti patches is because you are still addicted to nicotine, no matter how long you dont actually have a fag for....the minute you take the patch off you are going to reach for a fag....its the nature of the beast.
Cold turkey, as murderous as it is, gets that part of it over and dont with, and you can and DO forget for moments at a time, whereas with a patch you are still addicted to the fecker that your trying to get away from.
Its doable with the right frame of mind.
I read somewhere, could be wrong that the patches were originally made by the tobacco companys.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 09:58

i'm too mch of a coward,
bad enouh withthe stage 1 strongest patches but on progressing to 2 stage, more cravings, which i gave in to

charliecat · 05/05/2008 10:00

Exactly, now if you have just endured the Ow to begin with, then you wouldnt be in that place...and its something I would never ever ever want to go through again! Which is also a powerful mental tool.
But with the right frame of mind you can see it as a cleansing...honestly

OP posts:
sophiewd · 05/05/2008 10:02

You can do it, DH and I gave up in October, he had been smoking for 25 years me for 8 so far we have saved £2k and the money we haven't spent we are using to go on holiday in November, 2 weeks in Antigua with children.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 10:06

trembles at the thought of without patches

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 10:06

but i can see where you are coming from

CoteDAzur · 05/05/2008 10:13

I did it without patches and honestly it wasn't so hard.

(And now I understand what it must feel like to be one of those weirdoes lucky women who claim childbirth "honestly wasn't so painful" )

sophiewd · 05/05/2008 10:14

Hypnotherapy was the onlt thing that worked for me, DH gave up using willpower.

SlartyBartFast · 05/05/2008 10:15

my smoking cessation advisor nurse suggested hypnotherapy.

charliecat · 05/05/2008 11:10

whyquit is like the conscious(sp?) version of hypnotherapy...if you read it you will get what I mean, it changes the way you think abut fags. So instead of the nicotine going to a pleasureable place in your brain - you dont want to do it anymore and its only a matter of time before you take the plunge into This IS gonna be my last Fag and im never gonna have another one.

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 05/05/2008 11:53

Agree with charliecat.

charliecat · 05/05/2008 12:56

I think I poked you in that direction didnt i
