Hip pain? What could this be?

Hi everyone, I hope you are well.

Im only 20 and experiencing hip pain.

This started a couple of years ago in my teenage years. I would wake up out of my sleep with really bad hip pains sometimes on one side sometimes on both.

It happened once in a while sometimes for a few nights in a row. However it went away for quite a while. It's now back.

Every night I'm waking up with the same cramps in my hip. It's a really sore cramp. I now feel tender there throughout the day.

I suffer with horrible health anxiety. I've looked at dr googled and I can't find anything that could genuinely be the reason as I'm only 20.

I'm terrified incase it's some type of cancer as I know some cancers the symptoms can be bone pain.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I'm going to see the GP.

See a physio, it might be caused by the way you lie in bed.

I had this once and it turned out to be my shoes. Go to a chiropractor. I know everyone criticises them but they know so much about posture movement and muscles

Hettyhopeless · 04/01/2025 15:15

I had this and was diagnosed with gluteal tendinopathy. Mine was caused by running. I had 10 physio sessions and it took time but I recovered fully.

It could be referred pain from your back. If it only happens in bed it does sound like it is something to do with your back or joints. As a previous poster said, you could try an osteopath or chiropractor.

Extremely unlikely to be cancer, hips back knees etc get pain usually posture related, it may be inflamed tendon - don't worry about cancer, just see a GP or physio

Are your bowel movements regular and soft? When I get bouts of constipation my hips hurt, especially one side.

Fordian · 05/01/2025 14:47

The chances of it being cancer are vanishingly low, especially if the pain comes and goes, is sometimes in one side, sometimes both.

It sounds muscular-skeletal to me. GP or physio, I'd recommend.

Gosh my son, who is 28, gets this. Previously a runner. Is so frustrated bc he can't run or do the stuff he loves.

I have had this for years. Also in my knees and now toes. Think it's a rheumatic thing.

Maybe hip dysplasia, which is a malformation of the hip joints present from birth. Mine started causing me problems in my early 30s, prior to that I had no idea I had an issue. It can be corrected at your age, but you need to get to the GP and get it investigated. Mine was diagnosed after an MRI scan.
