What is this?

I had a fishy smelling discharge, assumed my PH levels were out of balance due to boyfriends sperm, so treated with Balance Active for 7 days. I thought it gad got better but the fishy smell is back. We've used protection during treatment.
What could this be?

Bacterial vaginosis

cheesecadet · 03/01/2025 14:25

This is what I got the treatment for but it hasn't worked, so was wondering if it was something else.

Anyone else please?

Hi, can I ask how old you are? I had this for the first time last year. Treated with balance activ. It always went but then came back. I’m post meno and worked out myself it was ph levels and they can be affected by lack of oestrogen. I went on Ovestin vaginal hrt and it fixed the problem.

greengreyblue · 03/01/2025 18:59

What was discharge like? Could be trichomoniasis.

cheesecadet · 03/01/2025 19:02

Thanks for the reply.
I've not given it chance to come back, I've just finished the balance active and not had unprotected sex again, smell hasnt really gone.
Very fishy, yellow discharge.

I had lots of straw coloured watery discharge but very little smell. Some redness and irritation too. Did a BV diagnostic ph test . Showed BV ( apparently not always a smell) but went round in circles until Ovestin from gp. Not had it since

greengreyblue · 03/01/2025 19:20

is it a new partner?

OurDreamLife · 03/01/2025 19:20

You probably need antibiotics to treat it. Those BA treatments probably aren’t strong enough.

stichguru · 03/01/2025 19:22

It could just be part of perimenopause if you are that age, but I'd get an appointment for the doctor to take swabs in case.

cheesecadet · 03/01/2025 19:42

Thank you for the suggestion of vaginal HRT. I'm currently using Evorel and have the coil.
So he's not a new partner but a few months after we met I had general STD tests done and all clear, not because I thought I had an STD but just to check, which I've done with a new partner before. I'm a little nervous that he's cheated but feel deep down that he hasn't. I take on board all the comments including one which says the balance activ may not be enough if it's BV. I've also just had a short course of antibiotics-Doxycycline for something else. So yoh would have thought that would clear it up, unless they weren't the correct ones for whatever is going on. Says on the leaflet it treats some STDs.
I think my next step is STD testing, not sure?

Your gp should offer swabs for your symptoms. It drove me mad for weeks and I should have just gone to get swabs but kept thinking I’d dealt with it. The balance active would clear it then 4 days after treatment ended it would start to return.

cheesecadet · 03/01/2025 20:51

@greengreyblue thank you, that's helpful. X

You’re welcome. You’ll probably find me on threads about this in April. I was desperate! Found a few other sufferers who were triggered by sperm or their period blood. It was all news to me.

Weefreetiffany · 03/01/2025 20:59

Might sound silly but have you eaten a lot of fish lately? Your diet does affect your intimate smell

cheesecadet · 03/01/2025 21:01

Thank you so much, I'm glad you're all sorted now.
No not eaten fish but thanks, I have noticed the connection in the past though.. Eww!
