Does alcohol make you ill?

I know, obviously regular excessive alcohol use is dangerous.
I enjoy a couple of glasses of wine some weekends at home. Don't go to pubs much, maybe once or twice a month. Rarely will I finish a bottle in a week at home.

But - whenever I have a (rare) big night out with more than a few drinks - say maybe 5-7 drinks and a few shots - I've noticed a pattern of coming down with a very bad cold/ flu immediately after. I feel like it completely destroys my immune system - possibly combined with less sleep than usual and being around more people than usual.

Anyone else ?

Yes definitely. I rarely drink because it makes me feel horrible even one drink

Is this something that has come on recently? If you don't mind me asking your age? Only I'm the same but even to the point where a couple glasses of wine makes me feel rough. I loved alcohol and would have many a night out or a few at the weekend ( not to an extreme) but once I hit about 35 I started suffering. I'm now 42 and I might have a glass of wine on special occasions (I.e Christmas) but other than that tea total. I think just as I've got older how many body processes alcohol has changed. It could be that

I used to drink. Then I had my gall bladder out and now even one small drink makes me feel like hell. Been tee total now for 12 years.

@chello123 I'm early 40s.
I definitely suffer from hangovers worse than I used to. I could easily stay out all night then power through a day at work the next day. But I still used to feel hungover - but didn't get the actual flu or a cold every time I was binge drinking in my 20s!
