Pholcodine is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and freely crosses the blood-brain barrier. It acts primarily on the central nervous system (CNS), causing depression of the cough reflex, partly by a direct effect on the cough centre in the medulla. It is metabolized in the liver and its action may be prolonged in individuals with hepatic insufficiency (i.e. liver problems).

It's a cough suppresant, although I'm not sure how effective it really is. It's a very old remedy, has been around for years and years.

It's fine. Was the only thing that stopped me coughing all night a while back.

its an old fashioned cough remedy that does actually work unlike many of the new cough mixtures available today. you can either just have a spoonful or put the spoonful in half a mug of hot water and sip it. we use it all the time in the hospital where i work if that helps.

It is great stuff! Only thing that stops my tickly cough, pity I can't take it at the moment as I am pregnant.

Its utterly useless and no better than placebo. Doesn't contain enough codeine to act as a proper cough suppressant anyway.
