Munching on soil from a pot plant....

So I leave the room for about a minute, come back and DD has managed to get onto the window sill, crawl along to the end, she has soil all round her mouth and in her mouth.

I have a plant on the window-sill - well, it's an ex-plant really that I keep making half-hearted attempts to rejuvinate. I'm not even sure what kind of plant it is, it might be a geranium.

So, do you reckon this will have been dangerous for DD? I rang the surgery over an hour ago and was promised a phone call from the emergency doctor within 10 minutes. I just called them back and it doesn't look like I'm going to get the call because it's all kicked off at the surgery apparently. They suggested calling NHS Direct, but since I've found them about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike in the past I thought I'd post on here first.

DD seems OK - not been sick or anything.

Still with me? Thanks for your thoughts

My LOs have eaten mucho soil in their time and have never shown any ill effects! Must be like bath water, only tastes good to small children.

really don't think you have anything to worry about, geranium leaves used in salads in poncey restaurents, wash off soil and out of her mouth if possible and just watch for signs like rash around mouth or vomiting, if these occur take her to a+e with the plant. my dd2 was very fond of eating slugs and chicken droppings at the crawling stage ( if she was out in the garden ) and she has survived !

Is she your first?

reikizen · 02/05/2008 16:50

Flibbertyjibbet - I didn't like to ask but the thought occured to me too!

My DS1 has eaten half a garden's worth of mud, and drunk litres of dirty soapy bathwater etc. He is fine .

it said on the news the other day that we are far to over protective of our children anti bac this etc and someone actually said they should be allowed to eat abit of soil - it's good for their immunity

DixiePixie · 03/05/2008 00:18

Flibbertyjibbet, how did you guess? .

I'm pretty neurotic as a rule anyway - and have mild OCD.

I wasn't so worried about the germs in the soil, more about DD getting poisoned by the plant IFSWIM... (though probably didn't help me not being sure what the plant actually was!!!)

Anyway, DD is fine

Thanks folks
