For anyone who has been on this antibiotic it says online you can't eat chocolate with it! I know alcohol is a massive no no but chocolate ? Has anyone eaten chocolate on it?

Me, chocolate is a part of my daily diet so I’m sure at some point I was eating metronidazole after eating chocolate. I also like bananas which seems better to avoid as well.
I do not tolerate metronidazole well and always have digestive side effects with it so maybe it’s the reason.

Bornlazy · 29/12/2024 22:02

I've never heard of that and I've definitely eaten chocolate whilst taking it as has my dh and my ds. The NHS guidance doesn't mention it either.

DarkAndTwisties · 29/12/2024 22:02

I didn't read this when I had it. Does it say it in the actual leaflet? If not I'd say it's fine.

I've taken it a few times for a couple of wisdom tooth gum infections, and a miscarriage infection. I probably ate chocolate at some point while I was on it. I didn't have any side effects at all, chocolate related or otherwise.

PieonaBarm · 29/12/2024 22:03

Definitely had chocolate whilst on it. Also had alcohol before remembering I shouldn't! Thankfully only had 2 small ones so stopped. Infection still cleared and was fine, but wouldn't advocate it.

The first time I took it it made me really nauseous but have had it a few times and been ok since

CandiedPrincess · 29/12/2024 22:04

Never heard that, can't see why it would be an issue.

Do not drink alcohol though 😖

FadedRed · 29/12/2024 22:07

The Nice Guidelines and British National Formulary BNF make no mention of any interactions with chocolate.

I had to have them recently for the first time ever (first antibiotics of any sort in about 15 years I think.) I wasn't up to eating anything except BRAT but no-one mentioned chocolate being something to avoid & I don't recall reading that on the leaflet. The GP was very clear that I must not drink alcohol whilst on them, not that it matters as I've been tee total for over 20 years.

hol92 · 29/12/2024 22:13

I read it online when googling if I could drink alcohol when I first got prescribed them, it said avoid salami, bananas and chocolate, I did think I may be being over cautious I'm just so worried about getting ill again I think!

But by the sounds of it it's fine so I think I'll tuck into the quality street while my husband has the lovely bottle of wine we were saving hahaha

Google search says:
Can You Eat Eggs, Chocolate, or Bananas While Taking Metronidazole?
Information related to eggs, chocolate, or bananas and metronidazole is not specifically mentioned in the available guidelines. However, according to the NHS, while taking metronidazole, you must avoid alcohol, but otherwise, you can eat and drink normally.

I know from bitter experience about not having alcohol with it. I'd finished the meds 2 days beforehand, so thought I was all clear. Went to a friends house for a drink before we were picked up for a double date. I had 2, small glass of wine and was crawling around her garden when the boys arrived for the date! Yes, on all fours, crawling around like a dog 😬. I could hear them all talking about me, and I was extremely apologetic, as has no idea what was wrong, but couldn't open my eyes. I'd forgotten all about the meds and it was an awful experience. Thankfully, I was put to bed and woke up feeling fine.

I’ve just done a four-week course. My stomach is destroyed! I ate chocolate and bananas. I’m beginning to think I shouldn’t have after reading this.

Tyramine Content in Chocolate

  • Chocolate contains tyramine, a naturally occurring compound that can interact poorly with certain medications.
  • While metronidazole is not a classic MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor), it can potentiate tyramine effects, potentially causing:
  • Headaches
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • High blood pressure

Honestly, you don’t need to worry about chocolate while taking metronidazole. The main strict warning is alcohol, because combining it with Flagyl can cause nausea, flushing and a really unpleasant reaction. Chocolate isn’t known to interact with metronidazole in any dangerous way — some people may feel a bit queasy if they eat something very rich while on antibiotics, but that’s more about stomach sensitivity than a real interaction.

I was actually on Flagyl (metronidazole) myself not long ago, which I ordered from this reliable pharmacy 👉 healway.co.uk/flagyl-metronidazole. I had to take it for a stubborn bacterial issue, and it worked really well for me: the symptoms cleared fast, and I didn’t have any side effects besides a slightly metallic taste. I did eat a bit of chocolate during the course and didn’t notice any problems at all.

Just avoid alcohol completely, take it exactly as prescribed, and you should be fine.

I took this and was eating chocolate all day long as I couldn't move after a gynae op. I mean I had diarrhea, but this always happens with anti biotics for me.
