My background is I had suffered from iron deficiency anaemia for years. No amount of improved iron rich food diet or iron tablets improved my situation (gastric bypass ruined my absorption). Eventually my iron levels dropped to a 2 and I could barely function anymore, I was finally given 2 iron infusions on the nhs.
i have been great for 2 yrs since. It made a HUGE difference.
now I am 28weeks pregnant and all the symptoms are back. I feel dizzy, fatigued, palpitations, shortness of breath and incredibly bad restless leg that is continuous throughout the night and while I relax. To the point I am just lying in bed crying with frustration because I can’t relax and fall asleep as I can’t stop moving my legs for hours on end. I am exhausted.
My blood results have come back with iron reserves at a 9, but as yet I am not anaemic. So iron deficiency without anaemia.
i have been refused an iron transfusion because of no anaemia, just been told to eat more iron rich foods.
I’ve been down this road before, not being treated until things got so bad, I am a mess that it’s happening again.
i know iron supplements won’t work, and my intake of iron in food won’t help as I’ve had a gastric bypass and have poor absorption.
struggling to cope with pregnancy and this on top while getting next to no sleep. What can I do?

You have my sympathy op - I developed iron deficiency at the end of my first pregnancy (5 years ago and at about 30 weeks) and was prescribed iron tablets there and then. I've had problems off and on and have been on Cyanocobalamin multiple times which doesn't work for me and gives me horrible bowel movements, so earlier this year I was put on the B12 loading injections and I honestly felt like a new woman! I'm now on 6 monthly injections and get my next one tomorrow - I know my iron is low again through a blood test but also all the symptoms started up again. Have you spoken with your midwife?
